Older Yeoman plotter - NMEA & WGS84 question

I'm acquiring a 9 year old Yeoman plotter.

I'm sure that there have been updates in the NMEA comms structure, but will they be back-compatible, i.e. will a new GPS (NMEA 0183) be able to talk to an old Yeoman?

Also, will it support WGS84 charts? Any ideas?
