Old Lugger

Old Lugger in Rye looking for good people. Anyone interested in sailing and caring for a beautiful boat please contact me. Louis

Hi Louis, can you tell us all about it, even if, like me, we have our own old boats to fettle, we could ask around if you post (lots) more info!
Plenty of lugger love on here!

Hello Paddy, thanks for the interest. Girl Sybil is a 1912 Cornish lugger. Shes a beauty of a boat with an interesting history. I have been through peaks and troughs as wooden boats do. As I said I'm just looking for some good people to enjoy her as much as I do. She deserves a happy crew

If I saw her it would have been 1972 onwards, Newlyn or more likely in the fleet coming down from Mevagissey, Looe, Polperro on the winter mackerel. I've checked for history on the Trawler Photo site but nothing.

That's interesting thanks. It would be nice to find an old photo of her working or even maybe somebody who worked on the boat. The only real history I can find is all from the newlyn archive,
PZ 595 Girl Sybil.**8.95 TONS . She was built in Porthleven around 1900, by the boat building firm of Kitto. Originally
named the Patricia she worked out of Newlyn as a pilchard driver. Originally a sailing boat, later motorised with
wheelhouse added. Skipper Bob Vingoe(GH). The Patricia would have been renamed the Girl Sybil when the boat
was acquired by the Vingoe family of Newlyn. The owner naming the boat for his daughter. She acquired the boat
on the death of her father in the mid 1930s and sold it to the Stevensons who retained the name and continued to
work her as a pilchard driver throughout the war years, she was then sold. Operating at Newlyn around 1932 and
later.**The fishing boat PZ 476 Margaret was towed in by Joe Carr, Girl Sybil after her engines caught fire at Lamorna
1940 , the crew were saved. Billy Stevenson joined her crew when he left school in 1943, aged 15 when the boat
was engaged in pilchard fishing. Bobby Jewell worked on the boat at one timefishing for pilchards. PZ595 Girl Sybil,
now based at Dartmouth returned to Mousehole for Sea, Salt and Sail Festival 8/7/2012. List: 1326 Richards;**4133
JFT. Reference: Stevenson & Perry 2001:33, 51. Cutting 12/7/2012. NA 4728

Girl Sybil was owned by a chap named Crago and sailed out of Looe in the late 80s early 90s . Try Paul Greenwood of the Lugger Association ....... He should be able to furnish more info .

Thanks Captain Clyst will have a look into that.
Just wanted to say the reason why I started the post. I have been very lucky to be able to own such a vessel and sometimes think bloody mad to. I probably won't be able to keep hold of her forever. While I do I am keen to share the fun with anyone of any age or experience who fancys a bit of traditional sailing. I'm not trying to make any money out of this its purely for the love of sail. The boat is based in Rye and I plan on as many trips as possible this year so please message me if interested. Louis

Hi, Girl Sybil used to be owned by my great-grandfather and I'm trying to track the boat down to find out where it is now. Would you be able to help?
