Hi All

Trying to find a replacement switch for an Eberspacher on a friends yacht, I think its the older Eber 1dlc

I cant find the exact switch for sale anywhere, and was wondering if the newer type rheostat switch would work OK?

Thanks

David

That's the same switch as my D3L, same as the D2 and possibly D1.

It's nothing special, i'd have thought a Carling Contura on-off-on would work it fine. If you need any help working out which wires do what i can put a meter on mine if you want.

EDIT : Another way to deal with the problem would be to fit a timer with an override button. Connect it's output to the switch wiring. That way, he can have the heating come on with the timer, or press the button for manual operation.

I think the switch is a little more complex than that. There are some diagrams and photos on the Le Tonkinois site which may help the OP, including this one...

I'm aware that this is different from the OP's switch, in that it includes a half-heat position, but it would seem to indicate that it's not just an on-off switch.

Most Ebers, if you put power to the yellow wire, will run on full chat. Take the power away and it goes in to shut down mode, this being tsken care of by the internal circuitry. So the Rainbow is right, get a basic thermo stat and plug it in so that it switches the yellow wire and away you go. To the OP, I have some basic Eber switches here on the boat, will dig them out and bring them home on Friday, available aftewards.

As you say, different switch, which will work differently. The OP's switch is on-of-on, the half speed is controlled by the separate temperature control switch. Fitting a timer across the output terminals of the "heat" setting will work, as would a separate off-on switch. Both of those options don't allow for the "vent" setting on the switch, which i find is a waste of time anyway, but the Carling switch will and at a 20a rating is more than up to the job.

Eberspacher called it a "Universal" switch, and I believe that it could suit different heaters according to how it was wired. The Butler Technik listing for it shows that it was supplied with different labels to allow for vent and half-heat options - https://www.butlertechnik.com/ebers...acher-heater-rotary-switch-251380890400-p1422

I've seen the switch, if used with the system that has the separate temp controller the extra position is redundant, although it would work. But at £60 ish, a tenners worth of Carling switch must be a better option. Even better, fit a 12v time switch and wake up on those cold mornings to a warm boat.

I do a bit of work on ebers.
Yes it is an old type switch which is just on off and vent.
If you require the vent mode then the 'universal' switch mentioned above should work ( circa £30) new.
If vent not required then any decent on off switch linking red with yellow will do.
If you want to be posh and have a light to show 'on' then you will have to add the brown negative lead to the switch.
