Does anyone have any experience - good or bad - with Evinrude 70HP 1978 triple outboards. I´ve been looking for an outboard for a while and been offered one of those - looks good, runs great and all that, but are there any specific problems/weaknesses with this model/year that I should be watching out for? Thanks.

That's a pretty old one. Had a couple of newer ones mid-80's and an '89. Good solid design, never let me down.

Early Johnson and Evinrude were pretty under stressed designs. Not sure about parts availability for something this old now, since the take over.

Back then, I had an Evinrude 55 on the back of a Microplus. Good engine, would push the old girl up to about 30mph, fast-ish then but slow by todays standards.

Only problem I had with her was the slow running jets, kept stalling when hot.

Yea - mine was a brilliant engine. Maybe the only one where nothing ever, ever went wrong. Mine pushed a 22 foot Picton Fiesta & took it everywhere. Mind you it hasn't got many ccs for the power (about 750 cc if I remember), so torque isn't great. But reliability of components - 100% for me.

I had one on a Shetland Suntrip. Went very well on the sea. Didn't much like river work. Very touchy about oil level in the leg (gear selection).
