I'm breaking the habit of a lifetime and buying a volvo engined boat. I know nothing about volvo engines!

All I know about these is what's written in the sale agreement.

Volvo-Tamd 62 nº de serie
101041395/68297 y 101041394/67060.

now the sales blurb says 306 hp, but I think 62s are 330hp?

Can you tell from the serial numbers?

What should I look for on test? They start and run nicely, all I know so far.

Any info gratefully received.

Hope to complete on the boat on 1st September and go straight to st carles, boat is just a few miles from there.

After a holiday, she'll be coming back to the UK. Probably via the canal du midi, but maybe via Gib - undecided as yet. Don't say lorry, boats belong on the sea. Don't care if lorry is cheaper she is not coming by lorry.

Boat was found by the boat oracle - whitelighter. Never ask him to look for a boat for you as you will end up buying one. :)

My S37 has found a lovely new home as you may have guessed from another thread. I would hate to sell my boat to people I don't like, I have had contact from all my old boats long after they've flown the nest and I've a good feeling about this one. My wife and I have already been invited out for a trip on what will by then be our old boat :)

More details when the fat lady has actually sung, but she's taken a breath with surveys completed etc it is all systems go.
 
A Volvo dealer can tell a lot from serial number if properly recorded but Volvo would not be happy for them to pass on some of the information ie vendor would not be happy for a dealer to reveal poor warranty details but basic hp etc should be ok.
 
I have Tamd 62a in my princess , they are 340 hp, similar to tamd61a but different injector pump, larger turbo, different cam in the sea water pump.

What boat are you buying elesar?

There were very little issues wthe the 62a, i wouldn't have bought them if they were !

By the time this motor came out, all the issues with corroding valves, exhaust elbows falling off, engine mounts breaking, etc were long gone, and they also played with timing and fuel setting to overcome smoke on start up. As far as I'm aware ther were no major design or warranty issues with this motor, which only ran for 2 years being replaced by the 63l and 63p.

Another sealine, a 40 ft fly. Good news if they are really 62s then , 306 hp will be a bit low. The broker doesnt seem to know anything about mobos. Can tou tell from the serial numbers, Paul.
 
If there badged as a 62 then 340hp, if you can see the pics of the engine the 62a has a black header tank and the cover over the coolers is black, on the 306 it's green.

I dont think there's enough air draft on the Canal du Midi so it's got to be the long way round.

Definately agree about bringing her home on her own bottom - get the weather right and it will be a fantastic run.

Lots of great places between SC and Gib though. I strongly recommend taking your time - we did the run the othere way and did it too quickly - so we've got to go back and visit some of those places we missed. Cartagena for example would be a great base for a few weeks - and explore the area round there.

6" to spare air draft according to the books, if I take the radar T off it should be fine.

Agree with you about not wasting the opportunity - I'll probably never have my own boat in the med again. My mum lives in southern spain she would bring the whole town to see the thing!! Can't wait actually :)
 
For some reason Volvo's lookup service does not recognize your serials. Should work for engines <25 years old... :confused:

green header tank and no 62 badge. in fact no badge........

They look like identical to the TAMD61A in the Fairline 40 I used to have which was circa 1988 vintage. If so, they are 306hp.
 
Look like a 61a 306 hp, and by the looks of the coolant that's exploded out the filler cap it's got some overheat problems, it looks like the coolant hasn't been changed for years showing lack of antifreeze and more importantly in the med it's corrosion inhibitor to protect the block, coolers etc.

Those engines are pretty good on the cooling side, it takes a lot of heat build up and expansion to push water out of the header tank cap like that, I'd have had a clean up before I'd have had that pic in an advert.

I'd be weary about the loss of coolant as to why it's happened.

After zooming in on the pic it's an early engine it has the smaller rubber inlet pipe to the turbo, def a 306 I'd say pre 1990 .

That's all a worry.
Its a 95 boat.

Sealine keep good records ill ring them.

OK a digit was missing. Tracked down thanks to the tenacity of Bob at RK Marine.

They are 61a that started life in this boat. But it seems the boat is a 92 not a 95, having started life in germany then moved to spain in 95 - 95 was the spanish registry date and it has been sold to me as a 95 boat.

Makes it slightly less of a bargain, though still keenly priced.
 
I'd have checked the hull number first to confirm build year, does it state on bill of sale as you could seek a refund or part payment in the contract .

I'd be proper Pi55ed off if the boat I'd bought turned out to be 3 years older than I was lead to believe.
At 5% depreciation per year that, (which is the way I look at depreciation - rightly or wrongly). I'd be knocking on someone's door asking for my palms to be lined with silver!
