I seem to remember some time ago there was a thread here which considered whether some oil/fuel were better quality than others. Sadly, I can't remember where I saw the thread. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated, or make recommendations.

I am using a CAV fuel system and the engine is a Perkins 4108. I do not wish to replace the CAV system, just use the best quality filter that I can. My latest filters, both oil and fuel were Fram filters, simply because that what I could get easily.

Thanks

Hi, you wont have any trouble with any filter manufacturer whose products are widely used by automotive, truck, plant and marine engine manufacturers. Fram are part of the Coopers group-or vice versa-and use the highest QC methods and very up to date plant and high quality materials to make their products.

Not always the case, just because a filter fits its not necessarily the correct one. You need to check the full speck on manufacturers lists
I have seen several filters that have blown out as they are not up to the bar rating recommended by the manufacturers

I have Mercruiser Isuzu based engines, and use Mahle filters sourced from the local Vauxhall stealer, at 20% of the cost of the Merc Quicksilver items.

Hi, I was once employed in a technical capacity by the Lucas Service group who were at that time owners of the Crossland filter company. I visited their production plant so as to become familiar with the product. While not disputing your experience, the constuction of the"spin on" filters we are talking about here is such that the oil pressure generated by a normal automotive or small (yacht sized) marine engine WHEN WORKING CORRECTLY would never be enough to compromise the filters integrity. Most oil filters have a bypass system to allow oil to reach the engine should it become blocked. The seal at the block/filter interface could of course fail if not lubed on assembly. On this subject,a sailing freind had his expensive car serviced by the supplying dealer recently. After 60 miles he reached his destination and noticed as he left the car oil on the ground under the car. It was leaking from the filter seal. Apparently these newer cars have quite a high torque setting and the filters have a hex head for a socket so this torque can be measured. The mechanic who attended replaced the filter and topped up the oil and said it was no longer practice to lube the seal. Guess what-the seal had "rucked) while being torqued up and had failed. In my day "spin on" filters had a smear of oil or grease on the seal and were done up hand tight. No longer apparently! Getting back to your origional reply, and mine, I assumed that the filter chosen to replace the ones sold by marine engine manufacturers would be replacements cataloged by the filter maker for that application, and would therefore be to an identical,or very close specification.

Most filter manufacturers have on line catalogue’s with specks for filters I would always check if alternatives have the same specifications as original
