I used the biggest tube, but you still need to decant the old oil from the 6.5L container 3+ times each engine, its so much faster using an electric pump to discharge into one empty container IMO and the water puppy can be used for lots of other applications (bilge water, transfer, etc) as it is continuously rated.

I changed engine oil and filters on my TAMD63P's yesterday: I used Shell Rimula R3X which has I believe now been replaced with R4, I also checked with ZF whether I could use the same oil in their gearbox and they confirmed that it was an approved oil, so now only one needed for topping up.

I used a Pella on my port engine which takes ages due to the volume of oil, but probably gets more out as the thin tube gets right down into the bottom of the sump. On my starboard engine I used a Jabsco Water Puppy 12V Model: 23680-003 with rubber hose over the dipstick tube, excellent results (thanks to Volvopaul) drained 20+L in a few minutes with no fuss or mess at all. I may make up a thin tube to get to the last bit at the bottom next time...

I'm interested in getting one of these water puppy jabsco pumps. You say you put a rubber hose over the dipstick tube to remove the oil, does it have to be done like that with these pumps, or can you use a thinner pipe which goes all the way into the dipstick tube like the pella vac pump setup ?

I would never do it by putting the pipe onto the outside of the dipstick tube. For sure, you will only suck out the old oil down to the level of the bottom of the dipstick tube, which generally is going to be well above the bottom of the sump. Therefore you might only remove something like 60 or 70% of the old oil. (Of course, if you happen to know that the dipstick tube goes almost to the bottom of the sump, then you're ok)

If you're going to use one of these pumps, connect it to a sump drain tube at bottom of sump if you happen to have one, or else use a narrow tube that you push down inside the dipstick tube

Yep - That's precisely why I used the Pella on the P-Engine and Jabsco pump on the S-Engine, to see what the actual difference was, surprisingly very little, I reckon about litre or so.

Its precisely how the Volvo manual tells you to do it on TAMD63P's, that is to place a tube over the dipstick tube, which I suspect extends very deep into the sump. These engine do not have a sump drain plug you see.

Having established there is little difference, I did in any case prepare a soft copper refrigeration pipe with a fitting on the end that fits neatly into my rubber tube and slides down the dipstick tube and hits the bottom of the sump, just to get the last little bit out and yes, the Jabsco Water Puppy pulls it up nicely. Excellent pump!
