Mine extractor a Sealey - works fine. I use a truck oil (not Volvo) that is approved by Volvo to VDS3 (recommended for mine) and is the correct SAE. As said above it is a lot cheaper and just as good.
Shell Rimula R4 15W40 holds Volvo VDS3 spec.

Thanks everyone for the response. The oil sounds a good bet.
It sounds like it could be a long winded job with the 'Pella' type pump. Are the 12v ones any good?
I've tried all sorts of small electric pumps and hand pumps, but this is the bees knees.
Pump it up, go for a coffee. After about 20 minutes or so, all the oil is inside the container.

++1 to that. Reverso and Wasp-pfs.co.uk make great oil change pumps that you mount permanently in the e/room and plumb to your sumps. I'd suggest however avoiding the rubber impeller variety at bottom end of Reverso's range, and get a metal gear pump type (I have a Wasp gear pump type on current boat). Once you have fitted one of these you'll wonder why you ever messed about with Pella vacuum type pumps. You can easily plumb to both engine sumps, both gearboxes and 1 or 2 gensets. These things are much smaller than a Pella too - it's the thing covered in blue plastic on the left hand engine belowIf you can get to the sump plug, the best system is a permanently plumbed in pump to the sump. Reverso make brilliant 12 volt oil extract and refill pumps designed for this purpose. They make oil changing a real pleasure instead of a rotten chore.

It takes so long that jmf has a tv set on each engineI guess it all depends on how much oil yr engine holds. For yr monsters I'd agree that using a vacuum pump many times over would be a real pain whereas for a smaller engine it's pretty easy.
However I do quite like the idea of the Reverso................
