I use a Pela extractor pump and bought non Volvo oil from the local Volvo dealer - it is about 2/3 of the price, identical spec and the one they use themselves unless the customer specifies they want Volvo oil.

Mine is a Sealey - works fine. I use a truck oil (not Volvo) that is approved by Volvo to VDS3 (recommended for mine) and is the correct SAE. As said above it is a lot cheaper and just as good.

Volvo truck depo is about £70 for 20 litres of VDS3. And they ll give you a discount on the filters too.
I have a the ball Pela 6- I think the very fine tube seems to be a bit too fine and it is painfully slow. Ok for the car, I found. Just bought the Sealey cylinder one for about £45, but havent tried that yet.

Thanks everyone for the response. The oil sounds a good bet.
It sounds like it could be a long winded job with the 'Pella' type pump. Are the 12v ones any good?

Contact this guy - good service and value used by several fellow forumites

If you can get to the sump plug, the best system is a permanently plumbed in pump to the sump. Reverso make brilliant 12 volt oil extract and refill pumps designed for this purpose. They make oil changing a real pleasure instead of a rotten chore.

++1 to that. Reverso and Wasp-pfs.co.uk make great oil change pumps that you mount permanently in the e/room and plumb to your sumps. I'd suggest however avoiding the rubber impeller variety at bottom end of Reverso's range, and get a metal gear pump type (I have a Wasp gear pump type on current boat). Once you have fitted one of these you'll wonder why you ever messed about with Pella vacuum type pumps. You can easily plumb to both engine sumps, both gearboxes and 1 or 2 gensets. These things are much smaller than a Pella too - it's the thing covered in blue plastic on the left hand engine below

I guess it all depends on how much oil yr engine holds. For yr monsters I'd agree that using a vacuum pump many times over would be a real pain whereas for a smaller engine it's pretty easy.

However I do quite like the idea of the Reverso................

I changed engine oil and filters on my TAMD63P's yesterday: I used Shell Rimula R3X which has I believe now been replaced with R4, I also checked with ZF whether I could use the same oil in their gearbox and they confirmed that it was an approved oil, so now only one needed for topping up.

I used a Pella on my port engine which takes ages due to the volume of oil, but probably gets more out as the thin tube gets right down into the bottom of the sump. On my starboard engine I used a Jabsco Water Puppy 12V Model: 23680-003 with rubber hose over the dipstick tube, excellent results (thanks to Volvopaul) drained 20+L in a few minutes with no fuss or mess at all. I may make up a thin tube to get to the last bit at the bottom next time...
