Oil Change Pumps

I wish to replace a JABSCO pump which has consistently leaked from all seams (the type where a thin drain hose is fed down the dipstick pipe). Have seen a Vacutank advertised by Compass and others similar but no experience of them. Most grateful for any info about pumps others have found satisfactory - make and source. Many thanks

hello tony
i was thinking of buying one of those vac pumps. but never got round to it. i used my little brass hand pump. with the thin tube that can go down the dip stick hole. i used it to emty 4,5 ltr. out of the sump.
and i thought to myself. whats the differance. if i use time and energy pumping a vacuum into a tank to suck up oil. or just suck up oil direct. the amount of energy required must be the same. not only that but in one of our danish marine catalogues. it wrote, "if you need to pump up cold oil buy our large model". vacuum, like pressure. is effected or reduced in the same way as pressure. liquid viscocity. pipe length and how thin ect. if you only need half the length of your pipe to be thin. then size up the rest. i am not bothering thinking about one of those things anymore.

best regards tony grant

Big Oil Change Pumps

The one advantage of the big vacuum type is the ability to pump vigorously for a minute or two, and then let it get on with sucking the gloop out whilst you change the filter, adjust the aternator belt, or stick the kettle on.

I would highly recommend these vacumn pumps. I have used for a number of years. They ensure that you have no mess as you do not have to make sure the waste oil container is not going to fall over etc. Before use run the engine to heat the oil or stick a fan heater near the sump. You can also use to drain difficult corners in the bilge. Recommend you try and get one with a turn valve and not the one which compresses the pipe. The clear type allow you to see what is being drained particularily useful when cleaning out the bottom of fuel tank. I think they cost about £35.

What I have is a simple plunger type pump made of brass similar to the ones that are fed through the dipstick hole. Except that I don't like the idea of poking plastic tubes inside the sump. Replace the normal sump drain plug with a 'Banjo' connection and connect this permanently to the suction end of the pump with flexible rubber hose. The pump itself is bolted to the engine. To change the oil just unplug the outlet of the pump, place a plastic jerry-can or some other container beneath it, and pump away. I have found this simple system to be idiot proof over many years.
