I thought I'd share with the forum my good fortune in receiving an offer on my Fairey Huntsman. I'd packed the boat away for the winter not expecting any interest so imagine my surprise when I received the following Email:

Dear sir/ma
I am Mr Donald George I am the managing Director for Track machinery Agent
in Holland, I am into sale of vertical machines, boats, agents, Tyre balers and
cutting machine. and i am looking forward to purchase this BOAT

FAIREY HUNTSMAN 31
i saw the price of 55000pounds on it, could you please
get back to me with your last price as i will like to offer
52000pounds for it.
thanks,
donald.

This has restored my faith in the boat buying public, that there are still purchasers out there who will offer a decent price for a boat without such unnecessary time wasting activities such as Surveys, Sea Trials or even viewing the boat!
The only reservation I have is that Mr Donald George has sent his Email from a yahoo account belonging to Donald Johnson, however I sure there is an innocent explanation for this.
I now look forward to forwarding my personal bank details to Mr George / Johnson and await payment. If he wishes to send me a cheque for more than the amount of the boat, I'd be only too happy to refund the difference to him while watching my pride and joy sailing off into the distance. :D

P.S. Having worked in Holland I was very impressed with the level of English that is spoken by the average Dutch person. I'm therefore surprised that Mr George / Johnson's English isn't a little better!

so, what's the point, getting your bank details, or simply checking and listing your valid email address in these 1m addresses for 100USD lists?

There are 2 possible ways this scam will work.
Either the so called buyer will make a transfer into the seller's bank account, take possession of the boat immediately and disappear with it. A few days later you receive a call from your bank informing you that the transfer into your account has to be withdrawn because of irregularities. This happened to me in my business and it was 2 weeks after the transfer that the bank withdrew it. Luckily I smelt a rat right from the beginning and didn't permit the goods to be shipped so we didn't lose out but people need to be aware that there is no time limit to a bank declaring a transfer irregular and withdrawing the cash from your account but generally, if its going to happen, it happens in a few days.
The second way this scam works is that the seller receives an email or phone call from the buyer saying that he is going to transfer an amount of money into the seller's account as a gesture of goodwill but part of it is to cover, say, an inspection by his technician. The buyer requests the seller to transfer a sum of money to the technician's account which usually happens to be in another country. Once again the original transfer is withdrawn by the seller's bank but, in the meanwhile, the seller has made that payment for the technician so he loses that money. Often the buyer makes incessant phone calls to the seller asking him to make the transfer quickly. This has happened to me as well but again, unless you're very gullible, most people would smell a rat

Don't mean to rain on the parade but that email has the typical ring of a scam to it IMO. Very similar to the type of crank "offers" you get when trying to sell a car privately. Def one to watch out for with eyes wide open

Mr George/Johnson must be very wealthy - he has offered to buy my boat too!
I thought I'd send the keys and then wait for his cheque in the post. That makes sense doesn't it?
