ocean super 8 outboard engine

Ocean made two outboard motors a 4hp and an 8hp model, these engines were probably made from Noas Ark offcuts, they are that old. They were both 4 stroke engines, air cooled with tiny exaust boxes that rotted and fell off! they were noisy and very unreliable (I had the 4hp) from what I can remember the agent was based in Southport lancs, it was rumoured that they could have been Villiers engines. The engines were quite powerfull. I cant help with any other info, a good search may find out more info, Vic of this parish tends to give excellent support for outboard motors, if he sees this he may know more, they were probably from the 1960s era.

In the 1960s and 1970s the Ocean Outboards were touted as having low pollution four stroke engines. These were actually side-valve vertical crankshaft lawn mower engines. The 4HP model used a Briggs & Stratton engine similar to those used on push-a-long rotary mowers. The 8HP model had a bigger Briggs & Stratton engine, probably one designed for an entry-level ride-on mower. Unfortunately there was no lighting coil and no electric start. Silencers AKA Mufflers were barely adequate so many owners welded-on extra expansion boxes to try to reduce the noise. The 8HP could be had with a very long leg that was suitable for boats that had a lot of freeboard. The good news is that Briggs & Stratton have an excellent spares service and if all else fails they can supply a power head that will fit. Another method might be to recycle an engine from a rusted-away garden tractor. Just how much power the gears will take is not really known but upgrading an 8
HP outboard to 10HP to get the electrics is unlikely to hurt. Good luck!
