Used an Aldi one to tap out new holes for grub screws on my P bracket, worked fine.

I have an Aldi ( Or Lidl ?? ) tap and die set. Yes fine for "soft" materials may be genearlly Ok but I'd be very gentle if using them on harder materials.

The set is let down by poor quality die holder and tap wrench but as I already have some decent ones that is no problem.

The cheap taps & dies I bought from Lidl are carbon steel, but perfectly OK provided you use a proper tap lubricant and treat them gently even in mild steel. They are slightly more brittle than good HSS ones. I was taught at school to use taps on the basis of two half turns forward, one half turn back, and repeat; and to withdraw the tap completely to clear swarf if it shows any sign of binding. Taps are usually broken because of misuse and neglect or ignorance of proper practice, rather than any defect.

Be careful of the "o" rings as they differ in "thickness" as well.I expect the aldi's ones are probably grouped solely in ring diameter sizes and are of one thickness.

I bought a box this lunchtime on a punt... I am refurbing an old Eberspacher D5W water heater which has O-rings for both the combustion air blower spiggot and the water pump. The parts list sizes these as 14x2.6.
Hoping I could get something appproximate, I just opened the box to find 14x2.65 O-rings... 15 of them.
The rings are grouped to diameter but are in thicknesses of 1.80, 2.65 and 3.55.
That'll do me.
