I need a nut with an odd thread. It's 8mm and its partner appears to be stamped "H8". It's not a regular M8 and searching for H8 nuts or even H8 bolts hasn't so far produced the goods.

Any ideas gratefully received.

H8 is nothing to do with dimensions. It's a tensile strength indicator. It's the most common grade of high tensile, in fact (it's not stainless, btw)

If an M8 nut wont fit then it could either be M8 fine or super fine (which you can tell just by looking; they are both quite rare in practice though) or it's an imperial that is close to M8 eg 3/8UNF

Thanks. I think it's probably the metric fine thread.

Actually it's a bit fraudulent putting the question on here: it's for a lawnmower (Mountfield) where the arms are connected to the mower by a captive bolt on either side (which is what I am trying to match) which certainly has a finer thread than the standard M8 bolt which is used further up each of the same arms.

Sorry Sir I have to correct you (doff cap) :) . 3/8 is 9.5mm what he he may need is 5/16 if it should be imperial.
If the OP wishes to PM me I'll be able to help as I have quite a selection of odd taps.

FFS! I clearly said it would be something NEAR to 8mm, but not any particular thing. That's what the "eg" means. Sure, it could be 5/15, or 3/8, or something else that isn't UNF or UNC but still near to 8mm

And WTF does he want a tap? To make his own nut, when he can buy one on line for 50p?

This thread it needs no more thread drift
