Perhaps it's a natural reaction of brits to support the french when really needed if the opponents include Germany...

What's really happening is that most support France, but expect the Germans to win. Where have I heard that before?

Unlike many I quite like the French, their Government is a different matter but then so is ours. At least the French Government do things that favour France first and to hell with the rest of the world, a bit of that philosophy round here would be nice! In footie terms the Germans are boring, Portuguese too good at diving and the Italians don't sparkle, but German home team advantage my win the day.
