Now for a WHEN was it

On 2nd thoughts, I think that is Touchstone, so 1981?
Congratulations - spot on!
Touchstone's first charter by a motley group known as the British Rail Signal & Telegraph Sailing Club. Based at Crewe Works, none actually had a boat of any sort but could get to Maldon using their Free Passes; I joined them as a guest for the week.
Touchstone was brand new, some of the paint not being fully dry, there weren't any winches, and the engine was a b'stard twin cylinder hand-start Sabb with reversing prop.
We lay alongside The Anchor for one night and, after eating and drinking inside, the then landlord left the outside lights on after closing so we could continue drinking our bottles of Scotch.
The pub has gone through several evolutions since then, but remains my favorite; Touchstone gained a new keeper several years ago and, I think, is ashore at Tollesbury.

Mike is certainly a character, a trait that seems to be getting rare nowadays.
I kept a boat at Fambridge in the 70s and several club members went on his charter cruises. They always came back with a tall tale to tell.:)
