at this boating lark. My family think I am crazy but I am hooked on boating since a friend and I chartered a Fairline Targa in Mallorca earlier in the summer. We shared the boat and the cost (ouch) for one week and I am now in the market for a similar boat. Now that the decision is made to purchase, it is time to decide on make/model/price and location.
I have been over to Ireland to look at a Sealine S34 for sale. She is 2002 model with 170hours. The engines are twin Volvo diesel KAD 32. The price is £100k and she is VAT paid. The owner (2nd) has ordered an F37 and is anxious to sell. He is also including the berth until 31st March 2005. Now, I have tried the boat, she seems to handle as well as the Targa. She seems bigger and I would say that she is in very good condition. She has a lot of equipment installed. I would say that I have more or less decided to go ahead however I would seek advise from as follows:
Are Sealines a good make? (There are about 10 in the Marina and there is a local agent).
Advantages / Disadvantages of leaving her in Ireland ? (Ryanair fly to Dublin from my local airport (30mins) and the prices are dead cheap. Marina is only about 20 mins from Dublin Airport).
Should I have such a new boat surveyed ?

We've had five Sealines, the last an S37. Great boats all, good value etc. Seems like this S34 is a good buy from what you say for a 2002 boat. Can't really comment about berthing in Ireland.

Good luck for the future.

Not sure how well it would go with KAD32's? I would imagine this size boat is about the limit for those engines. Would be nice if it had KAD43's or above. imho.

Yes, definately get the boat surveyed and get yourself trained up to at least PB2 level and VHF short range cert. (I'm assuming you haven't done training already).

Remember you either hold onto your cash or you hold onto the boat. Never is there a time where you don't have at least one of these in your posession during the deal.

For £100k you could get a S37 which IMHO is a bigger better boat although obviously it would be older. KAD44 engines are the ones to have if possible, definitely not Mercruisers. There are loads of S37's about because Sealine sold loads of new ones so you can be picky on condition and because there are loads about you can offer low
Sealines are fine (I've had 3) although they still have a certain Vauxhall type reputation amongst a few luddites on this forum
Cant see any disadvantages of leaving her in Ireland except the weather's worse than here and you have to use Mr Leary's dreadful little airline

Hi Greame,
Welcome to the forum. I know the boat and the marina quiet well. I also know the Sealine dealer you refer to. There have been numerous opinions on Sealine boats in recent posts and the general opinion is that owners are happy with them. we own one of the Sealines you refer to and indeed they are the most popular make of mobo in the area.
With regard to S34 in general, I suspect that Powerskipper will help you here.
With regard to THAT S34, I will be able to give you impartial advise if you PM me. (No bad news). Others have advised you to undertake training and I agree completely. I can recommend DMG Sailsports at Malahide. I also agree that you should have a survey done, if you are using a finance house they will insist on it anyway. Cannot advise on anyone in particular i'm afraid.

Thanks Mike,
I feel that the 34 is big enough. I am sure that I will make lots of mistakes over the next couple of years. If I am still game - I will then think about upgrading.
Ryanair is the nearest but not the dearest. Air Lingus uses Glasgow which is another hour for me. I travel over to Dublin a lot as my wife is Irish. Weather is same as home.

Thanks Michael.
I did,nt want to say on an open forum which marina the S34 is at. I may follow up your lead on the training. Maybe I am putting the cart before the horse, but the plan is to buy the boat and then undergo the training in her. Agree about opinion on Sealines in the forum, seems that they are not to everyones tastes, however I was impressed with her (PM on the way). Not using finance house, however I will take the advise given and get the survey done.
Can you expand on the marina and cruising ground etc.
Is there a good engine service nearby?
