I have just discovered that the Jolly Sailor, Old Bursledon, (a Grade II listed building) has been given planning consent to extend their kitchens. Unfortunately, at the same time, they are apparently going to completely re-arrange the interior of the pub, rip out the existing bars and in many peoples view destroy the lovely character and atmosphere in the pub, making it more of a restaurant.

I understand that CAMRA in conjunction with local residents, started a campaign but in the end the plans were approved.Apparently The Jolly Sailor closed in November 2003 for the refurbishments.

Anyone know any more ?

Don't think there's much to add to what you've already said. I believe the idea is to turn it into a "Gastro-Pub" which probably means that it will be full of suits and footballers, and that boaty types in smelly wet clothing will be allowed to drink their lemonade outside, so long as they don't make too much noise or upset the clientele.

Tragic, but probably inevitable - it's a premium location and selling food in Pubs is much more profitable than selling alcohol nowadays (unless it's over-priced bottles of wine to accompany a meal).

All very sad.

\"suits and footballers\" NAHHH!!

You can't get more than a couple of M3s in the car park and they ain't going to bike it there are they?

I don't use the place much nowadays as Vassilis's Taverna has taken it's place but don't you think it took ever so slightly too long for the food to turn up?

The Ship at Lymmington went the same way but soon got back to nearer it's old self when Mme saw the takings going down. There's always the bar at Moody's

As I said, it's not my war anymore but betya it comes right in the end.

What car park, they don't own such a thing as a single parking place. Agree about the horror of ripping the heart out of the pub though, although it has not been a good watering hole for many years, with a quick turnover of temporary managers and poor values, especially after it's role in Howards Way.

On the plus side, it ain't half quiet on my mooring now, just the odd brickie whistling his merry tune....

That's my point. If they can't get there it stays down to yotties.

have you seen an old episode of HW recently?

Yuk! The sets and the acting are chronic. It is a fond memory though but the memory is better than the reality. Don't ask anyone in the office about it (unless it's returnees' day). They usually say "Oh my mum used to talk about that" or "a Howard's what?"

Howards way

Howards Way was great. Plastic boats and wooden actors

Actors who had all learnt at the capital letters school of acting. They don't make 'em like that anymore!

(Thank heaven)

Which reminds me...

Of an FT review of an 'erotic' play starring Fiona Richmond (remember her?) which went something along the lines "Miss Richmond's acting was sufficiently wooden that one hopes she has been treated for damp rot. Meanwhile the men in the cast had only small parts."

Re: Where Vassilis\'s Taverna? n.m.

There are several. The one I was referring to is just off the Posidonis Avenue in Alimos, Athens.

Fiona Richmond

I remember her, which means that I must be on the cusp of becoming a dirty old man. I even remember ads for "Pyjama Tops", though I never went to see it.

This, in turn, reminds me of the fact that there used to be a convention on the telly that, at the end of a programme, the continuity bod would announce the name of any West End productions in which members of the programme's cast were then appearing. This led to a wonderful period when various programmes on the telly were followed by a plummy voice announcing that so-and-so was appearing in "Let's Get Laid" at the Whitehall Theatre. The convention ceased soon after........

I lived there for fifteen years. Now I know why I abandoned it for the joys of East Coast life. Far more civilized, and no more M27 traffic jams!
