I know this isn't exactly sailing, but has anyone seen the so-called easy new number plate system. My God its the little men in white coats gone mad. You need a manual to decipher the area and date i.e 51 = 2001 up 'til march next year.Lets hope they dont get to close to sailing<s>

Two points, first we were told in 1972...

... when reflective plates were introduced, that they would make it much easier, for example for an old lady knocked down by a hit and run to read the reg. no. of the fast receeding vehicle. These new plates will clearly NOT facilitate this purpose and all the "old lady" is now likely to be able to read before confusion sets in and she sinks back down to the tarmac is the first two letters and numbers which will only tell the town and in which six month period the vehicle was registered. (Feeding frenzy for lawyers!) We are told that it will help the plod to know if we require an MOT or not. Surely they know this already from the existing system. Now compulsory Insurance Discs WOULD make sense but would probable cause disenchantment with the existing government in the dens of car crime that pass for peripheral housing estates around most of our big cities.("Can't take you down the benefit anymore Ma it's too risky now!")

Second point. Real reason is of course to appease our European masters. This will show them of our willingness (despite cranky "dissidents") to be absorbed into a bland grey States of Europe. Notice that it also leaves a lot of room for the despicable ring of fools gold! It is currently illegal incidentally to cover this with a Union Flag but NOT illegal for Germans to incorporate National or regional emblems on theirs.

What an insulting and misinformed post. how can you possibly make such generalisations about people of which you obviously know very little. It is such attitudes that engender the belief that people who sail yachts are snobby and elitist. Another generalisation that is also misinformed. It is a pity that you seem to be the exception that proves the rule.

Footpad, I know what you mean, but at least I live in the "Garden of England". Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Post Office (or what ever they call themselves now) make the proud boast that there are a maximum of 8 individual address's per post code. Why not use that!!! I travel all over the UK and once I've knocked the little old lady down, even if shes got sense to get first part of my plate, all plod knows is that I come from Kent / W.Sussex and cars registered in 2001...that narrows it down,,,I dont think.

Re: Two points, first we were told in 1972...

Steve - whilst Govt. bashing is popular after all "I didn't vote for them" - well somebody did (!) - This has been planned and the SMMT and other motoring bodies have all had their pitch. Switching to a twice annual scheme has helped the car makers and garage dealerships by smoothing out the main buying points of the year into January, March and September instead of just January and August.

Given this you need to come up with an identification process that will allow a common mark scheme to be run and to keep running for a long time. This seems a good compromise - it's just different. I guess you whined about decimalisation as well.

So to help you - 51 for September 01, 02 for March 02 etc.. Moving the regional identifier from the end of the plate to the lead is a little bit more useful. T678 (as my current plate starts) hardly helps the police, but EP02 would narrow it down. Irrespective they don't go and look through piles of paper it goes into a computer - as in a search engine find EP02* so the mythical little old lady would be as well off as she is now.

You will find that you cannot actually get a Tax disc without insurance or an MOT, those of us with older cars know about this. Mind you having a pre '72 in the garage I don't have to pay tax at all - apart from that on fuel. Much nicer.

As to your second point IMHO Europe is a reality and we either get on board willingly and work it to our benefit or we stumble along like a cow being led to the slaughter. Your choice.

Re: Two points, first we were told in 1972...

Well Just a few points for you:-

The digits are smaller and more of them also unless the full number is remembered it cannot be used as evidence.

Most local identifiers are easily remembered.

As to getting a tax disc without insurance. HA! We have to keep all the cover note books of the various ins co's in our safe and have them inspected each month because so many are stolen. Also there is a high percentage of insurance certs bearing the vehicle identity "Any Vehicle, the Particulars of Which have been lodged with the Company" so gold earringed Wayne and his siblings can get a s many tax discs as they like on one certificate as it isn't registered at the PO Counters window just "inspected"

The Cynical smirking Mr Brown cut off free road fund just before the birthdays of our two MG's the b......d!

Yes "Europe" IS a reality. Just depends how you define "Europe"

Re: You don\'t like Europe but...

I have no problem with the Euro. How dare you jump to the arrogant assumtion that I am some sort of hypocrite - in hating Europe and keeping my boat there?

Just for your information, I find the people of countries on the European continent at least as charming and friendly as they are in the UK (In a lot of cases MUCH more so). I choose to keep my boat in greece because it is a darn sight warmer there, a great place to sail & cruise, the people are on the whole very honest and friendly and you don't get any bother at all from beaurocrats.

I welcome the Euro. Always have. What I object to is the European State. I will piss on the flag, never saluting it or standing up for it and sing God Save the Queen very loudly whenever Beethoven 9 4thMvmt pipes up as a "National" anthem.

Take it from one who works in the international investment business that ther is no need whatever to have political, military and legal union just because we are using the same currency to facilitate a common trading area. They manage perfectly well to remain independent within the Eastern Carribean Union, have a common currency (ECD), don't get homogenisation imposed upon them. They even manage to keep a duality with the USD.

Trouble with a lot of people in this country is that they dislike the US and think that forming into another "United States" will give them some sort of strength. Sad sheep IMHO.

If you parked ....

...your car in Beaumont Leys, Braunstone or New Parks Leicester, my friend, I doubt if you would have the paint left in 24hrs.

Don't be naive!

Cronin - has to be a wind up.

Mien Gott - such sweeping assumptions - gleaned from a tabloid newspaper at a guess. You have such "stong" views on it all, why bother stating them unless you are trying to elicit a slanted response.

As for Wind-Ups I am currently on probabtion having done a major one to the Motor Boat Chat forum - So I'd say I can see one.

Re: Dens of iniquity

Well actually, as part of my weekly workload and I am manic about where and for how long I park.

Many years ago (about sixty) my mother's family lived in one of the areas I mentioned. She just wouldn't recognise it today.

Who is arrogant here?
Reading your posts is like everybody is wrong but you.
About the European State you piss on the flag... What do I have to think about this?
You are agree with the Euro and the Euro is the end of the Pound and interest rates, types of change and other economics matters fixed for the European State.

We all state our opinions or reply to those of others.( That is what I thought discussion was) Nobody says you have to agree! It's a free world (at the moment!)
