Not again :-(

This thread clearly illustrates the dearth of boats below 40' made following both the 2008 financial crash plus the tendency for the well established builders to chase the money with builds of ever larger boats, largely for an overseas market.

This is pushing retained or indeed perceived values on boats from 1995 to 2008 to ridiculous levels. A broker I know says she just can't get the listings of quality <10 year olds because they simply don't exist. Regrettably anything >15 years old is now going to require increasing "unexpected" lump expenditures, that's life with an older boat. The alternative is to find say £500k plus for something much newer, although even cash spent at this level by no means equates to trouble free boating.

The 10% of value running cost p.a. Rule of thumb has been one I have observed as an accurate way to budget for boating for as long as I have owned boats. But it does average out, so if a boat has had it's actual expenditure held down then at some point the longer term 'average' will demand it be met, meaning for some teenaged boats some very hefty and very unwelcome surprises.

Sadly older boats don’t get shorter or need less maintenance so the 10% whilst handy does not really work as they age given moorings are the biggest single cost.

My s58 is currently running about 15%. Mooring, insurance, lift, antifoul , polish, servicing plus fuel. Other than refurb I have had few age related bills maybe £2k -£3k per annum on average ( rudder bearings and sump seal and new port exhaust ) which in the scheme of the other costs is pretty insignificant.

I don't think the right way to apply that 10% should be on the CURRENT value, actually.
But if you prefer not to think about what that means when applied to the price of the same boat when new, I sympathize with you, for obvious reasons.

I love it when someone thinks (£3,000) which is an average persons gross salary for a month is pretty insignificant

Hopefully one day things will level out

Always about the money eh, BigPlumbs! I think what Jrudge was saying was that the £3k age related costs he had were insignificant IN COMPARISON to his overall annual costs.

I love when people think this is an average man's hobby.

Sure those on a salary (me) can do it, but you have to be honest that the vast majority on here are probably in the top 10% of earners

I know many people who earn less than the 36k I quoted as a salary and they manage to boat and have great fun. They simply make it work. For example I have one mooring that is all states of the tide in a very nice place 100 yards from shore and it costs me £105 per year. One of my other moorings in a marina costs me £1600 per year.

The boat on the £105 mooring costs me about £1000 a year all in

Many other of my friends trailer boat for much less

In order to do this they do maintain acne when it is needed rather than slavishly each year and keep other costs down the best they can

One of the greatest contributors to this forum I know will be no where near 1/10th of the income many are on but boat he does. He has one of the longest running threads here and I know some very kind people on here have helped out

I think it is important that people on here are aware of this and understand. That was the point of my post

I don’t think it’s important at all.

Everyone boats on a budget....some large than others.....shouldn’t stop anyone sharing their exploits. Someone says....I’ve just bought a mooring for £250k.....great....makes no odds to me or what I’m doing. Good for them to be able too. You know you’ve done ok when you have a drone dedicated to bacon transportation :D:D

Takes nothing away from what anyone else is up to.

Back on topic....come on Russ......what’s next! :)

Well.
I popped into to see the dealer face to face to ask what they're actually doing to justify raising the price.
Answer was, drives off and replace bushes and seals, 6 new batteries, new duo props, service and AF. Plus a few other bits. Not sure if thats £5k's worth but thats what they want done so to be sure of not returning the boat under the warranty.

Then I tortured myself by sitting with a beer beside the river watching boats go by.

I am looking at another S34 in Gosport Sunday although over my budget its worth a look and a haggle, you never know. The broker sent a fully detailed SH of the boat. From the pictures it looks a very well looked after boat.

New props are £600 a set if stainless, but less if Ali.
Batterys are £110ea more than likely - suprised a S34 has 6 of them
Service? Dunno. depends how much is done
AF? I guess £500 if you paid someone to do it inc the paint

S34 has four batteries plus one if it has a thruster = 5 batteries.
Not sure where 6 batteries would come from.

Apart from the props, all sounds like standard maintenance stuff to me.

Pm me or email details of one in Gosport as I’ve a feeling it’s the one I did with Nick last year .
