north sea to black sea

1. The Volga does not end in the Black Sea, but in the Caspian Sea.
2. To go to the Black Sea from W- Europe, the way to go is Rhine, Main, Rhine-Donau Canal and then the Donau to its end. There have been a number of articles in recent years in PBO. The trip was rather hazardous for a while due to the (semi) war-conditions in Serbia.

I can recommend Bill and Laurel Cooper's book "Back Door to Byzantium". An interesting read and full of the sort of detail that you won't find in pilots or charts. Wasn't an easy trip when they did it but their draught is 1.5mtrs which didn't help and also the war in Yugoslavia was going on at the time.

Thanks every one for your bits of info !I am just reading the book "Back Door to Byzantium". and would really like to do the trip.

My boat draws 1 meter but more importanet has an air draught of 5 meters?

should I keep her or get an other?

Tom

Im sure the canals wont be a problem with such a large motor. I can manage all the canals in a folkboat and all the bridges are very high, even huge barges go under them! Even with a car on deck!
Going downs one thing but coming backs impossiable due to the current which is 5/6 knotes +

Im really interested to know if anyone has continued through Poland and on to rumania bulgaria and the Black sea whats the danube like?? and is it very corupt buracratic ?
Ex comunist contries are normalising but they still think we have money!!!

In my desperation to eat real Polish food i managed just tripe soup!! and the resturant owner at first would only serve me if i told him in Polish what i wished to eat!

when someone orderd for me i had to pay for both small soups 1.40euros each

Alternative or rather the only eatery is in comunist lands is pizza hut and macdonalds!!

I have been eating well since i now go to a hotel/resturant and ask once the 23euro meat for rich germans has been dismised, theres a 40% chance of eating well and reasonably

As we have to eat once a day i get lots of practice, but find the Folkboat kitchen by far the best ts in general!!

Gprs costs 50 euros per meg! orange in polish guise is the least costly but ofer 50kb fo 6 euros but have 1 giga for 15euros now one is very expensive the other not try to organise it!!!!!!!!!!peww

The only problem is that Poland isn't on the Danube or Rhine! I can't speak for Romania, but within the EU Eastern European countries there is little bureaucracy for passing through, usually a passport check lasting about 5 minutes. Corruption isn't a problem.

Good heavens, which restaurants have you been going to? And which town are you in? I must say that in 3 years in Poland (and 7 in Russia) no one has ever attempted to rip me off in a restaurant. Food in restaurants is extremely cheap (typically 3 to 4 times less than UK prices) and in all the towns I've been to there's been a great selection.

Again, all I can say is good heavens! Since Orange don't operate in Poland, I can only assume that these are the UK Orange roaming charges that you are paying. Get a PAYG SIM card from a Polish mobile company. For example, I use a PAYG card by Plus GSM - their GPRS charges are £1 per megabyte. The SIM card costs £5, but comes with £5 of calling credit.

i looked at plus gsm and idea which i thought was independent but the same shops advertised orange from french telecome at least the log was theres. Idea may not be orange then??
Anyway 50kbs cost? i forget but added up came to 40euros per meg, they had a seperat price for 1giga but no one knew how i could have that offer i was there first customer asking for data on a prepay card, i dident take it as it would expire if i dident recharge it every month, and international calls were far more than from a phone box you find everywhere

No ones ever ripped me off, just that when i want to eat im first presented with the expensive menue, for 20/25 zlottie so far ive had a very large cabbage salad and goulash with a small seven up for 8zloty, chicken soup for 1.50 large and lots of cheese filled "raviolli" (small pancakes) and a tomatoe cabage onion salad and bier for 9 zty

And the woman are stunning and freindly some/many even speak English--and with some practice very well!!

The tripe soup i had as the cafe owner was in anything but a good mood and i was starving the soup cost 1.5euro and was quite OK i was wondering if i should have pointed to the cuttlet??

no but you can get to Frankfurt! anyway Gadansks is great i dont intend to go to the Black sea just wondering how such a trip would be? but then with a boat with an engin!!

Don't know about ownership of IDEA, but think you may have misunderstood their pricing. Just had a look at their website www.idea.pl, and they offer different GPRS packages. For example 25MB worth of GPRS transmission costs 61 zloties ie. £10, which works out at about 40 pence per Megabyte!

I'm glad that you like Gdansk, it's a very retty town. Krakow is the real jewel if you get the chance! Also Krakow's absolutely dripping with cheap eateries and great bars.

I tried several phone shops but like the ones in France it takes forever in the que of people signing up/buying new phones!
I found a new shop with 2 people and no customers then !really helpful spoke English/German and called the idea number and had to hold on for almost half an hour to find the rate but then i asked how to configer my phone which no one knew

For my PDA to dial the modem i need a number such as *23*9# for example and the phone may have to be configerd to send gprs--anyway i use my sunrise card untill it runs out of credit!!!Next time i will try to organise their 1giga offer, now i have some English speaking freinds but now i will do it next year when i will visit the bigger towns and krakow for sure sounds really wonderful

Try reading Tristan Jones' "The Improbable Voyage" - he went from UK to the Black Sea via Holland, Germany, Romania etc in a 38 foot trimaran. As far as I recall, he had to road haul the boat from the Rhine to the Danube and got frozen in as well, but that was back in the 80s.

I am planning this journey at the moment. I have a power boat that draws 1.2m with an air draught of 4.5m. I have a colleague who works for a Bulgarian Shipping company whose vessels travel from Ruse in Bulgaria to Duisberg in Germany. They draw 2.5m with an air draught of 5m max, so I should be OK. Seems best way to deal with Rhine current is to 'hitch' a tow up the river to start of River Main. After Franfurt it is mainly 'downhill' and the current is in your favour. Not certain of best way to get from North Sea to Rhine at the moment. Any Ideas?
