I have one of those aluminium extending boathooks. You can pull them out to the required length and then lock or unlock the tubes by twisting one of them. Well, my boathook is refusing to lock up except when reduced to almost minimum length. This makes picking up moorings a tad difficult. I can turn the tubes as many times as I like and there is no sign of tightening. I'm not quite sure how the locking mechanism works, I assume it must be a bit like my son's telescopic mountain walking stick, i.e. there is a little plastic jobby inside that is expanded by turning a screw down the middle like a wall plug. I can't seem to get the tubes apart to find out if that is the problem. Any ideas gratefully received. The Forum has not failed me yet!

I can't help. Mine did the exact opposite. It jammed up when fully extended and I can't undo it!

In the end I gave up and got a new one, but I don't suppose that that's what you wanted to hear /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Mine is a solid wood affair with a hefty bronze fitting at the end. It's a nuisance to stow and heavy as hell but when it comes to pushing against the quay or picking up heavy mooring buoys it's second to none.Got fed up with having them splitting in two on me when asked to lift the smallest weight from the water.

With the one I have (which regularly locks when it should be free and falls apart when locked), you twist the plastic collar at the end of the outer pole, and in this, is different to the ski-pole mechanism.

It always amazes me that people will spend a fortune on their boat, sails, moorings etc. and then begrudge spending 15 quid on a new hook and persevere with worn out ones.

The hook came with the boat and worked perfectly all last season. I don't begrudge spending to replace worn out kit, it just seemed curious that the device stopped working. I posted to the Forum in anticipation of getting some benefit from the experience of others and did not expect a snotty lecture from someone with a heavily vested interest.

On mine, you hold the outer tube whilst twisting the locking collar. It won't lock by twisting the tubes. Not sure if yours is the same, but could it be operator error brought on by inter-season memory loss?

Probably because they object to spending money at the swindlery!

I got my new boathook from Sainsbury's.........long story and I'll tell you at the end of the season if it has been succesful.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across like that (had a bit of a bad day). The plastic locking ring in the tube either breaks or gets salted up and there's not much you can do with them except keep it as a spare.

Regards Bob.
