So, they have bit the bullett in Ireland and banned smoking in public places, including your own home if it is a Business Meeting. I have just returned from lunch in the pub and I asked the Landlord what he thought, he said " I wish I could ban smoking, but can't take the risk.
What do you lot think....

Ban it! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Give non smokers a choice, something they are severely lacking at the moment.

I mean, "Smoking or Non Smoking sir?" "Non smoking please...." then you get sat on a table which is about 15 foot from the smoking area. Strangley enough, smoke actually travels in the air and reaches the non-smoker.

Agree .. I do'nt go out as much as I'd like to cos all the pubs are smokey which can trigger a migraine .. in most places smokers are the minority but even one inconsiderate smoker can destroy the ambience for me .. no problem with separate areas as long as they keep the smoke to themselves ..

no question - we should do the same in the UK. Who's not been having dinner with a fine bottle of something to enjoy and then someone lights up next door and then all you can taste is B+H!

they should do as my local has done and fit large conical extractor fans ( the stainless steel oven style ones) that are are placed a few feet over each chair around a smoking table, with these switched on the smoke gets sucked up immediatly making the whole room clear of smoke. problem is people move the chairs slightly and the smoke permeates into the pub so he has had to fix them down to the floor. its also a case of having the bar staff higher and lower them in accordance to the height of the customer at the table to make them effective.

smoker but wished i wsn't. But then i stop and life is awful as i begin to feel as miserable as jimi.

I think everyone should be banned APART from me. Perhaps ciggies should be made to be about £2 each cig, and then it would be rather rich and swish to have one evry other day or so. .

Seriously, the tube is a lot less ghastly since the ban, as are buses (so i hear)

Quit immediately. If you can cope between now and the end of the financial year, you can cope thereafter. That's what I did, three years ago. 'Cept I started a week earlier, and used those horrible patch things as well.

Git! Listen buggerlugs I may look miserable, that's something us Scots were trained at school for .. hours of the tawse,Sakespeare, calculus & latin soon saw to that. However we are incredibly happy inside due to the richness of our culture, the diversity of our educashun and fried tattie scones with brown sauce and egg yolk .. now those from Yorkshire are jist plain dreich ... I know cos I've been there and saw the locals cheering themselves up by throwing themselves off the pinnacles at Brimham rocks ...

No. It should be banned. If I go to the pub after work I have to get my suit dry cleaned afterwards to get rid of the smell. It's horrible.

I reckon they should ban cigarettes, not smoking! Free the weed! I've never had anyone complain at having a hooter lit up nearby. In fact they normally try and edge closer.....

Seriously, though, its just another example of the nanny state stepping in when peoples' morals/manners aren't up to the job of regulating their actions. All these bans, limits, and such, are just a way for the Govt. to make money out of peoples bad manners and inconsiderate behaviour. I smoke. Alot. Never in restaurants, near poeple who are eating. Never in anyone's car, unless they suggest it, and never in any non-smokers face. I manage to smoke far too much without annoying anyone.

That's a very considerate attitude.

I think many smokers (including Two Stroke) don't appreciate just how objectionable it is to non-smokers.

Re: Ey Oop - I object

Or I would do if I knew what dreich meant.

We are not miserable we are "dour" which makes us the salt of the earth. It may look like miserable to the uneducated but we are happy being like this.

Like the Scots we know we are a superior breed surrounded by people who don't recognise this fact.

(My brother-in-law is half Scots/half Tyke - can you imagine what a miserable git he is)

I can understand you find it objectionable.

Let me put this scenario. You can have an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink. The option is available to you. Alcohol is legal and can have just as serious effects to a persons well being.

Most smokers are quite considerate, however, take the option away and you are now discriminating.

Actually the ban is "no smoking in the workplace" this of course extends to pubs etc. by virtue of the fact that bar staff are at work and therefore are entitled to work in smoke free enviroment. This ban is introduced under the Health and Safety at work act.As a smoker living in Ireland I welcome the ban and will take this opportunity to give up.Many smokers will tell you that they tried to give up but it all became too much when they went out for a pint so this could be our chance.....fingers crossed.
