NMEA2000? AIS Radio to Garmin Plotter

I've just had a look through the archives to see if this a common problem - but there doesn't seem to be a clear answer. I would like to connect the AIS bit of the VHF radio to my Chartplotter but I'm not sure if the cable is available off the shelf, or do I need to go to a 'marine' electronics person to get one made up.

I have a Standard Horizon GX2400GPS/E Fixed DSC with AIS built in. It works well but is a bit of a faff as it is down at the chart table, whilst my Garmin 751 is up in the cockpit. Where can I get a 3m - 3.5m long cable that would have the correct fitting at each end to suit? I'm sure this is probably a dumb question but hopefully if I can get the cable, I can then work out what buttons I need to push to get the units talking to each other.

Or am I being naive?

Connecting the two together with NMEA 2000 will require a NMEA 2000 network. If you simply want to send AIS from yhe VHF to the plotter, use NMEA 0183. You just need some two core cable and crimp connectors.

VHF blue wire to Garmin brown
VHF grey wire to Garmin black (12v neg)

Make sure both devices are set to 38,400 baud. No need for button pressing, set the plotter to overlay AIS, job done.

I wanted to do the same (B&G V50 with Garmin 451) and bought a NMEA2k kit (from Quark-elec, but I dont think that is relevant) . Best thing ever, turned everything on and it immediatly showed AIS info on the plotter with no faffing about.

But unlike your B&G, the OP's Garmin plotter has NMEA 0183 ports, so he can achieve the same result with a few pence worth of two core cable. Unless, of course, he has other N2K equipment that would benefit from being networked.

Really sorry about the time lag.

This morning I joined my Garmin 751 to my AIS SH radio, pressed a button to do something with NMEA 0183 speed and Hey! Presto! It does what it says on the tin.

Thanks to @PaulRainbow for making something complicated (to me), simple.
