NMEA output from Garmin 152 GPS not working

I have a Garmin 152 GPS which works fine as a GPS. I wanted to connect this to my plotter using the NMEA output but the technican who tried to do this said the NMEA output was not working. Is this likely or is it a matter of altering settings? How can I check this? I have a seatalkand NMEA interface unit which I assume must be used. ( its an old Raymarine plotter without built in gps.)

Have you set the Garmin?
Menu> Com > Serial Data Format > NMEA In/ NMEA Out IIRC

If I'm looking at the right link I think it's p84 ("Advanced NMEA Setup") which describes pretty much what earlybird says. Probably worth checking the manual for the nmea/seatalk converter and not bothering to enable output of any sentences which the converter can't convert to seatalk.

Are you sure you need a NMEA/Seatalk converter? If you also have a Raymarine autopilot then from S series onward and I think all ST control heads have NMEA input.

Thanks for your help. Basically is what I need to do - set up the NMEA output ie switch it on and then connect blue wire to the NMEA input to the plotter? The unit is a Raymarine RL80C combined radar and plotter.

Default protocol is Garmin-Garmin - as others have said you need to change it to NMEA-NMEA
