NMEA 0183 Programs

I'm sharing a few programs that I have written for my own use. If anybody would like to download them for their own use please help yourself.

Well done, and full marks for sharing!

If you fancy a bit more programming then adding TCP/UDP over wifi as an input would be very useful, NMEA over wifi is becoming more common.

OK .... Sonar seems to be running well under Vista but only shows depth 0 as I don't have any NMEA input until next week when I'm back on board. I receive the NMEA data over wifi but can configure that as the COM port which Sonar is looking for.

One question .... there are appear to be two versions of Sonar included in the download: 4.7.1.0 and 4.8.1.0 but I installed using the root Setup.exe and the version I have actually installed is 4.7.0.0.

Have I done this correctly?

Richard

User Tip: The Depth Alarm dialogue box flashing on and off will drive you mad ...... but just shut down the program and re-start it and it will re-start with the selected parameters and without the flashing. ;)

how do you do that please?

I should be able to use the virtual COM ports in NavMonPC (free download) which I think are Franson drivers as I have these already installed. I think you can probably install the Franson drivers as a free download separately from NavMonPC if you don't have it .... although it is a very good free program for displaying all your wifi NMEA data so worth having anyway.

OK, thanks.
Was just out of interest anyway, opencpn can read the wifi data directly plus everything goes out of the raspberry Pi as signalk as well so easy enough to see what's going on.

NavMonPC has various time charts including depth and wind speed/direction. Is there any signification difference between these programs and the charting in NavMonPC.

Virtual com ports easily setup using the free GpsGate software. I logged into my vYacht router, set com port 1 and set that in the sonar program. The data window shows it is receiving the data, OpenCPN shows depth, but sonar still shows 0. Using win 7.

Sure you both know this but for the benefit of other users, Franson and GPS Gate are the same thing.

NavMonPC went quite a while without an update (I think it had one last year sometime) and the Franson drivers included with it got very out of date. If these old ones are still bundled with the latest version of NavMonPC it is far better to decline to install them and download and install the latest version of GPS Gate to ensure the virtual COM ports created by NavMonPC work well.

Anyhow it should be noted that if the OP has implemented overlapping I/O in his software then it will not work properly with the virtual ports created by the Franson drivers wherever you source them. Not saying this is the source of the problem you report Paul, but it sounds like a possibility. Perhaps the OP can let us know.

OP, does the stormwatch program allow export or archiving of the wind data it gathers? NavMonPC has similar charts but once the plot runs past the maximum "time" of the window it seems to be lost forever (unless you just log the whole NMEA stream and I have always found NavMon quite flaky at actually writing anything to its log file).

I cannot get it to work. It was receiving the data from my vYacht, via a COM port with GpsGate, but not showing any depth.

Once i close the sonar window it will not open again, although it shows up in the Task Manager. Clicking the sonar shortcut again starts a second instance of the program, but it complains that the COM port is already in use, presumably by the first (invisible) instance.

An uninstall/re-install and it works as above, but again fails to open on the second attempt.

Thanks for all of your feedback. It's difficult to determine what are 'bugs' and what are other issues but I'll go through again what has been said and correct where possible.
Answer for 'bitbaltic' - I haven't built in archiving, it's meant to be for real time use but it could be done if you'd like to define the parameters.
Cheers lads

Report back on Sonar .... my laptop receives NMEA data over wifi so I set up a Virtual Serial Port in NavMonPC to map to COM16 and then set up Sonar to receive on COM16 at 38,400 and ....

We're still in the marina so the variation in depth is just the boat rocking up and down but, on full screen, it looks pretty good.

I'm not sure that it's any more practical than just looking at the numerical depth gauge on the helm display but there you go ..... it works!

I tried to use the Sonar program when actually sailing a couple of weeks ago and when I start it it says something like "Your trial time has expired. Please enter code to continue".

It's a pity the OP didn't mention that he is not actually "making the progams available for or own use". :ambivalence:
