I have used the current Nitromors with success on varnish but it was a bit of a slog. It reacted like you said, but I kept dabbing it on over an afternoon as soon as it looked like it was drying out. The flat scraper removed some varnish which had softened but it took about a few attempts to eventually get the varnish off alternating between repeated dabbing and scraping. Slow but I got there in the end.

If you want the good (but naughty) stuff just go on eBay. They’ll sell it to you, but only after you’ve declared you’re a professional. To save yourself a trip down the confessional after making this false declaration, just say three Hail Marys - that’s generally what priests give as a penance for that sort of infraction.

I have just used Polycell Gel on my floorboards followed by bleach and sanding to clean the holly strips. Scraped with the Bahco scraper in post#23
