Next time it could be your boat!

In my marina (Crest Nicholson, Penarth) there's a truly wonderful family with five daughters (aged 1 - 10) who for some years now have lived on a 50' converted wooden fishing trawler - big North Sea job from the '30's.

Even though they have always paid the annual mooring fee, and the marina rule permit liveaboards, Crest Nicholson have just told them to clear out and have refused to renew their mooring contract for this year.

It seems the marina management don't like the look of their boat - it upsets the neighbours because it looks like Noah's Ark. It is clean, there's no laundry hanging around / no potted plants and bicycles - and the children are the politest you will ever meet (they've become my daughter's best friends.

So, Crest Nicholson have decided to have some form of beauty contest. If they like your boat, then all is fine. If not, then they give you a two week warning to clear out, despite several years of residence, liveaboard permission, and hence children in school and working families. Bristol Channel isn't the South Coast - there aren't dozens of alternatives. In Cardiff there are NONE. To do this to such a wonderful family - freinds of dozens of boat owners in the marina - seems to me to be a truly despicable act of corporate arrogance.

If this account bothers you, PLEASE email the management of Crest Nicholson and tell them what you think. If enough members of this forum, and other, plus the marina residents complain, MAYBE they will see they are making a HUGE PR gaff.

The family in question:

M/v Pitkin, Penarth Marina

Help correct an injustice being done to a fellow sailor. I appreciate your help.

I am just about to send an e-mail after this post.

I hate this kind of Sh*t. Wait until the marina manager is staggering home late one night after being out on the Pee and then wack a piece of 2 x 4 round his kneecaps or get a hot poker and brand him for life.

Revenge is sweet, get mad and get even :)

News Flash : marina without customers?

Vince & Mary Shalom
M/v Pitkin, Penarth Marina

Dear sirs

concern about your companies attitude towards the above.

We the boating world humbly Suggest a re think.

The boating world is a very small world and I guess visiting boats and service work are important. The season is short and the winter long.

What would happen if we all gave you two weeks notice that we are not going to use you anymore. Could you find another source of income in two weeks? What happens if the summer trade does not start.

We are also very forgiving if for some reason you have made an error and this problem was a breakdown in communication. That is, instead of telling them to go, you meant to say please stay and for being good customers we have decided to give you a discount. That I nice thought?

Why not share your companies concerns on the forum. If a solution can be found I am sure this family and their new global friends will find a way.

What ever the outcome the boating world would like to know your responce

Sent an email for you, asked what they considered was a 'pretty' boat. Unfortunately this situation is not uncommon. Marina on the Thames threatened to throw wooden boat out, but to be fare he caused a lot of trouble and the boat was a state. Also know that a Marina on the south coast wanted to throw out a boat that never moves and never has anyone on it but looks a state in the entrance.

Surely if they pay the moorings and obey the rules they're entitled to moor what ever they wish.

Raggie & Stinkpots DO co-exist!

By the way, I am a rag & stick boater (usually on Scuttlebutt) so It's good to see the daft animosities set aside on this issue. Thanks to everyone for emailing Crest Nicholson so far. For those who haven't done so yet, keep them coming. Email from your work too, if you can. Just keep piling on the pressure. Maybe send a letter, fax or email to your favourite magazine too -- if you could spare the five minutes it would take.

Thanks again - I will keep all forums informed as to developments.

Humperdink,

I have e-mailed the address given with the following text. Hopefully if enough of do this they will relent.

It has been brought to my attention by good friends of mine that you intend to evict the M/V Pitkin from your marina without just grounds. I would urge you to reconsider your decision based on good business sense and a sense of moral duty.

Your current behaviour is nothing short of the "unreasonable landlord" type, and will serve only to damage your business very quickly due to adverse publicity.
