There is no requirement to give a payment unless using the moorings.
I did have a chat with the HM a while back. The mooring payments and the voluntary contributions are kept separate.
My memory may be failing me but the mooring payments went to HQ whilst the voluntary payments were kept local for local improvements.
When I have a course on I explain to clients that payment is voluntary and they usually donate a £5. I myself do not add any additional contributions as I've paid enough when the voluntary payments were a requirement.
Another reason I no longer pay is because I was showing clients how to tie up to a mooring. Maybe 20 minutes and the HM wanted full payment.
Thanks for the explanation, I don't have a problem giving a donation, but I do want to know what they are going to do with. Do you have any ideas what the local improvements might be ?

Which are?

How can you improve somewhere, when the attraction, is an unspoiled natural harbour?

Well, from what I understand, the removal of some of the posts over the years has been paid out of the local fund.
The isolated danger post (now a bouy) used to be a preferred channel marker before it was repainted a few years ago.
Some may think this is stretching the use of the term 'improvement' and I would not necessarily disagree with them.

I have a mooring at Shalfleet - wonderful location.

I'm amazed at the number of people who argue about making a donation and yet think nothing of paying £5 to park their car for a few hours.

If visiting, be aware of the number of lobster pots that now litter the entrance - becoming a real problem this year
