Well , someone has been busy on the West jetty. Signs saying it's dangerous and will be removed soon, it wasn't that bad , it is now they've removed a load of boards so you can't use it ...bar.......ds

Not sure, probably NT. Will find out if they show up today. I've been landing there for 55 years going to miss that bit.

So, just spoke to HM and it is NT and in our modern world where your not allowed to fall in the water they have shut it...they offered it to Hamstead estate who don't want the cost of replacing it. And to add insult to injury the Pubs shut again as well.😩

The Boardwalk along there is also closed due to lack of maintenance (big sign up erected by the council), although it is still passable with care.

There's a previous thread about it. #15 mentions an honesty box for contributions to help with maintenance. Have noticed that before, but thought it was some relic from the past. If they really wanted it used wouldn’t they put up explanatory signage? When the boat comes round for their voluntary contribution next time I’m going to ask them about it. They might be a conservation body, but it only seems fair for them to meet us half-way and provide something for our money.

Makes you wonder why the jetty was built in the first place. What's changed that nobody's bothered about it now? Guess it had to do with that Hamstead Boat Park near the end. What's the story with that? Is it just abandoned now? Never seen anybody use it. (Who/what is Hamstead estate anyway?)

Hamstead… if you hear banjos, run like hell, they say in West Wight. It’s a district, the whole of that headland tipped by Hamstead ledge. It has it’s own history, I daresay Google would give you some info. The estate own the boat park and the car park, so there’s little use of any of that, residents only. Hence the decrepitude, for historical reasons it’s not the most economically advanced bit of the island, and has limited attraction for builders. Slipper clay and bog.

£6.75 a pint ! is that lager or bitter ? Seems like another pub to avoid at those prices.

Is this the jetty we mean? Admittedly the view is nearly three years ago.

Looks like a suitable site to moor the chain ferry to create a new pontoon. Maybe though the NT might object . Shame about the Folly -go to Seaview and pick up a buoy and have a pint at old Fort Seaview for proper island brew or try the pilot boat at Bembridge harbour where they brew own beer.

The jetty is still there and usable with common sense care but is apparently due to be removed and not replaced. The harbour warden reckoned the cost to be in the region of £100k. The NT are apparently refusing to invest. Maybe it could be 'listed' 🤔.
Again, the boardwalk round the marshes is 'shut' but is perfectly passable by any human with a modicum of sense.
H&S clipboard man again.

If the honesty box was properly instigated, say at £5 a pop, it would take a decade or two to claw back that £100 k figure, based on the handful of people I’m guessing would want to use it a day.

Are these figures realistic? Would we pay more? Would more people want to use it - never saw more than 4 or 5 dinghies tied up there even in peak times.
