VicS's QUOTE: I can remember on one of my early visits the reaction when I tried to pay for something with a credit card...

Just how early was your visit, Vic?

Is it really that bad, gentlemen? Or is it just an easy target? ...

It's just an easy target. We are used to being patronised by these intrepid sailors who arrive thrilled at their trip across the Solent Ocean but we're not easily impressed. They are always surprised that there isn't a lot of difference between here and the north island and often find out too late that the locals are even more adept at ripping them off than all the multi national chains that are also over here.

That odd steam train on the IOW was a diesel ex-tube train as I recall from a visit many, many years ago. The Severn Valley RR is real steam trains, full sized.

But look at it this way: The IOW is really like a great uncrowded ski resort: don't tell anyone about it.

One of our American humorists once said: "No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded."

The Electric ex Tube 1938 tube trains are worth a ride in themselves and run from Ryde Pier to Shanklin ( the bit to Ventnor via Wroxall was closed as in 1966 nobody wanted to pay for one more transformer believe it or not when the steam engines were withdrawn)

However at Smallbrook Junc you connect with the Steam Railway which goes to Wotton. If you want atmosphere etc travel on this. Non of your modern ex British Railways 1950s stuff on this line, all carriages are nearly or well over 100 years old.
