Newbie after help and advice.

Ian, having just spent a few days in Fuerteventura (just a few miles down the coast from Lanzarote) I can honestly say there wasn't a day when I would choose to take my boat out (white horses everyday in normal wind conditions). And flying over Puerto Calero and Playa Blanca reminded me how poor the cruising grounds are in Lanzarote (very few marinas, largely rocky shores, no decent coves / Calas and inhospitable seas). Furthermore the boats that were in the marina were largely Sportsfishers or sailing yachts. There are very few motor cruisers. So I think you really do need to think what you will get from having a boat down there (it won't be a cheap place to stay).

I'm sorry if I sound negative. Perhaps you might get more positive feedback from the 'live aboard' forum.
 
I understand what you're saying, however the main intention is to spend the uk winter months there. Only the canaries can offer the weather! The med of course would be great,having stayed in Moraira/Denia a few times but the weather just isn't good enough in December/January etc.
I'm open to other suitable locations.

We are now looking at purchasing a property in Lanzarote to live in but we would still like a boat for use at weekends .

So recommendations please for a sports cruiser upto 38ft and a budget of £90k.

Do you want something you can weekend on, over night on or just day boat with the occasional 'im to drunk to go home, lest stay here' berth?

There is lots in the price range and length, but all do different things. Also, how are you going to get it to Lanzarote? Is the transport part of the £90k budget or on top?
 
I have to say, I wouldn’t fancy any mobo in the Canaries. The swell, wind and heavy seas are abundant. It’s a sailing yacht place IMO.
 
I’m after something we could at least overnight on just in case we want to visit the surrounding islands.
I would be looking at buying in Spain then bringing it over. The £90k doesn’t include shipping costs.

So your main use is a day boat with the occasional overnight, maybe two night weekend for just the two of you?
I guess if you are living there you are going to have quite a few visitors (that happens when you move some hot and gorgeous) so I would suggest something with a fair bit of deck space.
From what others have said something that can handle a bit of sea would be good - I don't know what services are like out there but I'm guessing either diesel inboard or petrol outboard? The latter easy to service and remove from boat to get services if necessary.

I can think of a few new boats that would suit - Axopar 37 and Fjord 40 but both blow the budget by about 2.

Perhaps a Windy Khamsin 34/35 would suit. I think you would get one in budget.
 
Go get some tuition, powerboat level 2 at least, then go talk to these guy's.

They will hire you a boat in the med, then you either walk away or if still mad enough to join us lot, they will sell you something suitable & knock off the cost of the hire, also a good firm to deal with, they have a good reputation to lose & go out of their way to make sure that doesn't happen.

Windy would be good. Also consider 28 Ghibli. Allow £12k a year to run it (excluding depreciation).
 
Yes, the occasional overnight stop with just the two of us although we do have family over there so the ability to sleep four would be good. Iwas thinking along the lines of Targa 34/38.
I appreciate the advice so far, and I will be doing the pb2 then day skipper before taking the boat out.

You might be able to find an older Targa 37 for your budget. They’re a nice boat. Or a Sealine S34. You’d get a nice one for your budget.

Regarding training, I would hold off on the PB Level 2. You’d be much better off getting some own boat tuition on your new boat over a couple of days. Otherwise you’ll probably do a PB level 2 on a RIB which is a totally different beast to a twin engined sports cruiser!!

I would get your Day Skipper Theory in as soon as you can. That’s is really helpful and important course. Then once you have the boat and so some tuition go for the Day Skipper practical, in your own boat if you can.

Thanks for the advice, that would probably be a better way of doing the training.

Any further ideas on a suitable boat?

Not read all replies so this may have already been answered
Don’t bother with PB2 as you get experience on completely the wrong boat. I got the impression they want to take money off you.
If the school still does them, competent crew and helmsman.
Will give you a good background. May even be worth asking for a day to run through these on a school boat with an instructor. To go straight in as day skipper is a lot to take for a beginner without prior knowledge.

Day skipper theory, do this one first as this theory will be used on the practical course.
See if you can do this in a classroom as questions can be asked and as a newbie there will be a lot to,ask

Day skipper practical

If day skipper is done through the RYA and you join them they will automatically give you ICC (international certificate of competence, which is a requirement in the EU

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking the pb2 would be a good thing to do seeing as I’m a complete novice.
I intend to get the day skipper theory done some time soon probably online or if anybody can recommend a good school in the northwest then I’m all ears.
