New Yeoman \'Pro\'

I collect my new Yeoman Pro next Monday, wanted one for years, any hint and tips from old Yeoman hands?
Connection should not, I hope, be a problem. I have an ex RAF radar techie and ex Decca man bringing their soldering irons. One of us is not short sighted, one of us is not colour blind and I will buy the beer,,,,,,, afterwards.

When using the Yeoman the chart can (and will) move around under the cover if its the Sports model. When setting up the chart, you have to put in 3 reference points. Mark each of these with a cross on the Yeoman cover and you'll be able to see if the chart has moved and be able to re-position as necessary.

I use mine with a Garmin 128 and can send waypoints to the GPS from the Yeoman. Make sure that the GPS datum matches the chart datum or you could be 400m out!

It's a great device and I have no desire for anything fancier. Even if you lose power/GPS you still have positions marked on the chart so can continue navigating using traditional techniques. Enjoy!

Tom

Great device. It is worth going to the Yeoman web site and down loading the connection information for whichever GPS you have. If it is a common make then the information is in the Yeoman manual. Be careful you don't bend the backing sheet. We had to get a new one after about 2 year's use. They are great and in my opinion beat any of the CRT based plotters

Re: New Yeoman \'Pro\'

Got one last year, connected to old Garmin & works a treat. I keep my chart under perspex so it dont move. Yeoman site will give you even the oldest GPS wiring diagram and it must have taken me all of 10 minutes to wire it up & get it switched on.
I have been a professional seaman/navigator all my life & the fact that you can (should most definitely) plot positions on a chart gives me a nice warm feeling that if the electric imp goes on strike, you still have the last know position marked down & can go from there. Much as I like the GPS and all the wizzy bits etc, when technology fails it's back to basics & the Yeoman provides the best of both.
Happy sailing.

Do not know a lot about the " Yeomam Plotter " after putting in the paper chart
do'es it work the same as a chart plotter, giving a constant update on the chart as to your position. Like a curser or something moving across the chart!

thanks mike

The plotter has a 'mouse' with a lense and 4 coloured lights around it. Each light is an arrow telling you which way to move the mouse. 2 of these will be on telling you to (eg) move down and left. When you get to your position, all the lights go out and you can mark the chart through a small hole in the centre of the lense. It's very quick when you get the hang of it.

It also has a display which can be used for position readouts, course and bearings etc and various buttons for controlling the operating mode.

It is interfaced to the GPS and you can position it at a required waypoint on the chart and transmit this to your GPS receiver. All very handy, and like Mike McKie I was also a professional navigator for a number of years. I endorse his comments fully re electronic imps.

Superb bit of kit.Instant plots when the going is tough or in fog, particularly if you are shorthanded and best of all, you keep a proper paper plot. I also have put 2mm acrilyic sheet protector on top of the mat.
I find it best to use in range/bearing mode, this gives instant view of proposed track / distances etc. around hazards and you can easily see tide effects.
I prefer to stand at the end of the chart table (nearer to companionway steps) so
I set the chart length ways. Means extra folds in the charts but they don't bleed!
Prepare your charts in advance with plenty of points. Each folded area of the chart becomes a "seperate" chartlet with its own Chart Catalogue Number.I write this Catalogue number large in Biro near the fist reference point on each "chartlet",for these ref. points I usually select intersecting lines of lat and long that are printed on the chart thus less chance of making an error punching co-ordinates in. These ref. points I also mark large in heavy biro.
I soldered a Din bulkhead socket onto the MLR 312 gps leads and fitted a plug onto the Yeoman lead to make it easily removable. Hope this helps . Enjoy your new toy.

Re: New Yeoman \'Pro\'

Used a Yeoman in my last Victoria 26 - once you've entered the library of charts - it's a simple matter of recalling the chart number; entering the 3 fixed positions; and away we go.

Also moving the puck across the chart can give you an instant bearing and distance to a position once using GPS mode.

I used a fairly high scale of chart as a rule - usually covering most if not all of my trip.

A very decent system - brilliant with these Admiralty pocket sized chart portfolios now generally available.
