New YBW weather

Very interesting but IMHO the wind charts are difficult to read.It would be good to have more detail on smaller areas like from W.Europe to the Azores or the Canaries.

Seems pretty good for a start.
One problem I found was in the animation control box
Clicking the radio buttons for days 2 and onwards does nothing. If I try to scroll forward an hour at a time it gets as far as 21:00 then I get an error message "Go Pre". Is this a new nerds insult?

Anyway back to the real world.

Seems to me that if you can only get information up to 2100 on the current day (or maybe its 6 hours ahead of current time?) then it is going to he hardly any use. Plenty of other places to get good info up to a few days out. I would suggest that Theyr are using YBW for some cheap advertising.

Do you seriously expect people to pay for this service? If so, aren't you just spamming your own forum?

The met charts are available free for 144 hours in advance and are far more useful IMNSHO. You appear to only give todays forecast for free, which is sod all use, so I guess that this is a money making exercise, rather than a service for readers.

This is an affiliate deal and while we can make something if people sign up it's more important to the site to have a useful service that you guys will use, as opposed to try and get everyone to take a subscription.

Point taken though, thanks.

No Portsmouth, and what is that animator about? couldnt get it to do much, and I wouldnt bother again, Magic seaweed do the same but better and free, its designed for surfing but you just change tabs from swell to wind and save to favourites

I have to agree that a sailing forecast that doesn't tell you what's happening tomorrow, let alone further ahead is of limited value. I subscribe to theyr.net anyway.

Nice try.... But why should I pay for something that's free elsewhere. Magic Seaweed is the place for me.

[/ QUOTE ] The new Theyr service is MUCH better for UK inshore and coastal waters than GRIBs available elsewhere such as Magic Seaweed or UGRIB, which are more suitable for longer passagemaking.

0.1° high resolution models
100 times more data than the standard 1° to capture all weather patterns and sizes of 10km and greater and shows land and sea effects on a very small scale
Detailed regional 6 day meteograms
Includes all precipitations (rain, snow, freezing rain), wind and temperature
All land features and topography taken into account
The only service to take account of vegetation type, soil type, snow cover and depth, slope and real topography

This is by far the best coastal waters forecasting currently available - it is state of the art, and well worth £40 per annum to anyone who has enough money to pay for a S. coast marina berth . . . (which sadly doesn't include me but does include plenty of the moaning minnies and big engined blingers on this forum)

If Dan can persuade Theyr to give then a slightly longer free lookahead - 36 hours would be something to aim for - then this will be a brilliant free service as well.

[/ QUOTE ]Check out Buoyweather first, the cruisers' choice. £15pa and low bandwidth connection - truly yachtie-friendly. www.buoyweather.com Buoyweather is free for 30 days, so try it out.

Just stopping by to say thanks again, this is all really helpful and it's great to compare against some of the other sites you guys are using. Hopefully it means we'll be able to refine our weather service to make it competitive - I get the impression that for the most part people are finding the actual information useful, hampered by the time factor.

We've also passed this info onto the guys at theyr.net to highlight any comments about the functionality and glitches. Sorry to copy the same reply across all the forums though, must dash!

Cheers,
Dan

I agree the state of the art service is attractive to some people, especially racers I imagine. But I wouldn't pay or use it for cruising. Rather use the normal inshore forecast and spend the money saved on a sailing magazine.

Can you turn off the state of the art bit and just give us 1 degree resolution up to 144 hours out for free (like everywhere else), make it clear that 0.1 resolution is available and those who want to subscribe can. As it stands now it's just a shop window for selling a subscription, rather than a useful service. Or extend the forecast to 24 hours, that way I can actually use it for a limited period, and if I like it I'll subscribe.

Subscribing to a free trial is a pain because it will probably involve filling out a load of tedious forms which will then be used to send me junk mail. Or you will want my bank details with the promise that if I ring within 14-days the transaction will be cancelled. If I don't like the service and call, the number will cost a fortune and the poor underpaid operator at the other end will cock up the cancellation and I'll spend weeks trying to stop you debiting my account and get my money back.

Hi Dan,

Using BBC Weather I can get seven days tidal predictions for my home port ( as against the nearest standard) as well as the coastal forcastes ( in the correct order) and the shipping forecaste. For serious planning I would need the synoptic charts and these are available from Meteonet.

For my money the new site is not as clear or as easy to operate as a lot of others, certainly nothing special.
Why should anyone use it ?

Tried the link to xcweather and the site looked very interesting but then it fell over. Now it is 'unavailable'

Is this a common occurence ?
