I've been asked to 'mentor' a friend who seeks to replace some elderly winches. He's looking at Antal 44 STs.

I've no experience of this make. Can someone, who has, kindly advise on durability, availability of spares, whatever may be relevant. The boat is a moderate-displacement mono cruiser of 34'.

The Antal winches are very good, made with good materials and easy to work on, I have two on board, which I bought last year, very pleased with them. I haven't needed any spares, they don't look like they will need any for a few years!

Past correspondence here suggests that it is worthwhile looking at the detail of power factors, gear ratios, etc. I looked at various manufacturers' offerings in a 16 size for my halyards - Antal's was equivalent to a Lewmar 10, if one existed. They do look to be well made, though.
