If you chose a standard horizon set try and get one that can use the ram4 mike as it is so much nicer than the ram 3 and much bigger screen.

The GX1800GPS which I linked to in post 31 takes the optional RAM4 mike.

Thats the set ive actually got but didnt want to suggest a bias towards standard horizon ?.. The explorer range has a lovely big blue screen but is quite a small set only some 3" deep and i think its a lot nicer than the more expensive one with ais.

Cobra in the 80,s were the got to have tranceiver (27mhz),

That's going back to the CB Radio days ..... a lot of Cobra's and other were carried into UK in those days as UK had confused time of CB ... the problem was CB 27Mhz overlapped the 27Mhz Model control band .. and even the rest of band due to the boosters many people used - models were shot down. I remember on Butser Hill in Hampshire ... incidents where CB'rs used the height to get more range and those with boosters shot down a number of very fine expensive models ...
UK stupidly tried to set a new CB freq .. but it was too late ... 27 sets had been brought in and actually sold over counters - as you could own legally as long as you didn't transmit !! After failure of the UK's allocation of 928Mhz ... the UK adopted a lesser bandwidth 27Mhz .. USA Bandwidth is still not allowed in UK.

Later of course UK allocated 35Mhz to Model Aircraft, 27 remaining for all but mainly for surface models ... which eventually were given 40Mhz. Today very few use those freq's as 2.4Ghz with Frequency Hopping has revolutionised the hobby .. the hopping has removed the need for Freq Control ..

But that's all another world .. one I thoroughly enjoy when not boating.

Hence my 80,s cobra reference. Midland also made really nice sets.. Ive still got a highly modded harrier kicking around somewhere. Use to haul a 9ft firestick up my yacht mast... But nowadays its just a few truckers and offroaders

When comparing side by side SH and Icom leave Cobra so far behind in the real world, as also said both Icom and SH have full uk based proper technical/ service department, these spend most of their time supporting both HAM radio, professional comms and Aero

I have a couple of 80's USA sets in the barn somewhere ..... despite my modelling !! But in those days - I knew the range of ch's I could use on it to stay of the model ones.....

My Standard Horizon GX2200e with gps and ais just went kaput. Four years old. My other non gps one is about 12 years old and still going well.

It just went blank and silent with no nmea. Power getting to it.

Any idea if these are worth repairing?

Yes, have already done that but the forum may have prior experience of their repair facility.

Fitted a Cobra with integral GPS a couple of years ago. No command mike but can reach & operate it from cockpit. Cobra MRF77 Marine VHF Radio - Dyfed Electronics
