New to motor boats - need some help please!

Hi Alf,

Planning this route:

Wash - Grimsby (stop for fuel only) - Scarborough - Amble - Arbroath - Peterhead - Inverness

I investigated road transport and it is about twice the cost of the fuel and not half as much fun!

See you in Inverness soon I hope

Rich

Rich,

Consider Bridlington or Scarborough for re-fuel as getting in to Grimsby & out again will take you an hour each way... you could be in Bridlington by then ... what sort of range do you have ??

Edit: got old papercharts of the route that you can borrow, if you need them onboard...

Oooh ... Arbroath is Tidal, so may not be the best if just for re-fuel...

Hi Alf,

I guess I am being a little conservative with fuel until I get a bit more familiar with the boat. She has 230L tank with an average of 1.5L/Nm which should give me a safe range of around 120NM with a 25NM reserve. I am also intending to take a couple of jerry cans with me as a further precaution. Brid is do-able at about 90nm but dries out so I would have to get the time right for tides. Scarborough is a bit of a stretch in one for me as well as fuel! My plan was to go into Grimsby, top up then push on to Scarborough. Not sure what other alternatives there are, I need to spend a little more time with Reed's and work out a couple of alternative plans.

The boat is around an hour inland from the wash (in Wisbech) which adds time but not much fuel consumption because it is all at 5 kts.

Any other thoughts?
By the way, I was near your home this week, just a quick night stop in Stavanger (Sola Strand Hotel - my favourite place!) after a 10 day trip in Hjeltefjorden doing some survey work into Manger. Still ice up there in the sheltered areas.

cheers

Still would consider Bridlington instead of Grimsby ... We did Grimsby, but wanted an overnight stop and it took us a fair bit of time to get in there and through the lock... Believe Bridlington have mooring buoys and good holding ground for anchor ... we had Bridlington as a possible stop for shelter if weather was poor ... If you do Bridlington, then you could do jaunt to Whitby for sleep & re-fuel...

... and do remember that most of the harbours on the East Coast north of Bridlington can be challenging to enter in anything stronger than a F3 during NE's... and some close for entry at F5... (you do not want to be there in a small boat). Whitby to Amble and a quick top-up at Eyemouth, could allow you to bypass tidal Arbroath...

When are you planning to do the journey ?? Northe sea is a fickle mistress as you well know... hence suggesting road...

Stanvanger is my "home town" ... but where-ever I owe the most money is my home.... :) :)

Hi Alf,

I will need to look at the tides and see how it looks. Brid is 90nm but Scarborough is too far in one leg.

I am planning to look at the weather with an eye for the last week in March first week in April - but now you have got me thinking about road again!

Maybe I could give you a call for a chat one day?

thanks

rich

Happy to talk Rich ... think you have my mobile number..... in Houston at the moment, but returning to sunny Scotland on Sunday, so please do not call me before 12:00 UK time .. :D

Make sure you look at competitive cost for road transport... I remember seing something on e-bay as well on that...
