Think family!! If economy is your main concern, enter ye not this world of boating. Seriously, boating is expensive but the one thing you should do is consider reliability and safety first. Boats that break down and put your family at risk, are a pain in the *rse. Get something as new as you can afford in the style that you want, and then get it professionally checked over before parting with your money.

Next - get some professional tuition. Powerboat 1 & 2 should do it. Boating is miles more fun when you know what you are doing.

Last - switch your caps lock off, capital letters means you're shouting :)

Salcombe is about 4 to 6 hours from Lymington. 4 on a good day, Will refuel there. Then on to Penzance another 2 to 3 hours. Stop Penzance overnight and meet rest of fleet.Nex day it's only about 25 miles there.

So much more rewarding than sitting inside insulated from the environment with the autopilot turned on

You found a good spot to buy petrol in Penzance then Brendan?? Mind you I did get diesel from Newlin about a mile away. This summer for 20p which was much better than Penzance 30p..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

There will be 5 cars there, as 5 club members are towing boats there, and plans already made to ferry fuel cans from petrol station. Oh ye of little faith.

Read the bit in the thread about petrol boats needing a little more planning to do long distance cruising. Though actually, after filling in Salcombe, loads of spare capacity to get to Scillies. Where, before you ask, we also have plans for filling.

All sounds very commplicated and reminds me of the petrol V8 thingy I had, with 20 galon fuel tank. Anyway would it not be a good idea to get to know where he's keeping this mithical boat and where he wants to go. Else all look a bit stupid!!

I think it depends on what kind of boating you will persue. I have a 26' Sunfury that has a single volvo diesel (cost about 20k). Not good if you want speed but I'm a river boater - pub to pub and lots of good company. Even with the cost of Thames mooring the boat is much cheaper to run than I expected and it is used very often - out of the water every 3 years. As I said not fast but sleeps 4 / 6 and looks drop dead georgous

What on earth is complicated about it Haydn. The club do this all the time. Probably have 20+ meets a year, 95% petrol boats, and no problems at all.

Why will we look stupid. He wanted pro's and con's of petrol vs diesel on a 25' boat. He's moving up from a rib which is almost certainly petrol, so he will have some idea of the issues.

At the end of the day, it comes down to how much you want to spend. Diesels always more expensive, but if you can run to the cost of diesel then I'm sure the advantages outway the disadvantages. Having said that, all but one of my boats have been petrol and 'touch wood' no problems. Out of interest I believe they have a 25/26 ft Bayliner for sale at Deacons on the Hamble, that has been re-engined with a single diesel - oh..and welcome to the forum! Let's get back to the important things ipw. What colour boat ? Does it have lots of room for shoes? How many showers? A bath would be bliss. A bidet is essential of course.

You'll need somewhere for the crew, or you'll be having to make your own G&T ...... and no naff fender socks !

Suggest you investigate cost of petrol at Torquay and Plymouth before you go to the Salcombe fuel barge. South Devon Fuel's barges in both Salcombe & Dartmouth are notoriously expensive.
If I'm about I might come to the Scillies as well.

Yes, Salcombe barge is expensive, I've used it before, but Torquay is a big detour off route. Plymouth is too far (eating into safety reserve). Besides, I like Salcombe

If you want a diesel 25footer but dont want to have to cough up for a new or neary new one then buy a boat late 80s early 90s with a singlle petrol unit thats knackered but the rest of the boat is in good working order (cruisers 224 is a good example and I know one going for £7000 with an AQ171 in it that needs binning in the next 3 years) and buy yourself one of the new D3 or D4s from Volvo for about £9500 therefore for around £17k you will have a boat with all the kit and a brand new diesel engine in it for the price of a late 90s Bayliner.

I know its a bit more leg work but it achieves the desired result in the end. See Solitaire he's done it with his. Any one wanting cheap fuel when the regs change...come and see me.

Hi - I've had petrol, LPG and now diesel all in the same boat! The diesel option is by far and a way the best. I put the diesel in at the end of August this year and have now logged over 80 hours on the diesel. Yes, diesel may be equalised with petrol in the nexy ferw years, but I can tell you that that won't effect the fact that your'll get more nautical miles to the tank on diesel than on petrol. Look out for the article in the March issue of Practical Boat Owner on the full story of my conversion to diesel power. Oh, and I'm also doing a test using fuel magnets - magnets are to be fitted first week of January. Distributor claims that I'll get a 10% increase in fuel economy - watch this space!

BoatUS insurance claim stats which I posted some time back and now can't find show that by far the greatest number of boat fires are caused by electrical faults and very few from petrol itself. I've seen a petrol boat go up in flames after refuelling, when most fires occur, and I've seen two diesel boats go up due to aircon electrical probs. So theoretically a petrol fuelled boat is more dangerous but in practice, that's not the case. And this info is from thousands of insurance claims.

1-Can a 25ft [2.5 ton] be towed successfully with a 4.2 lwb landcruiser[3.5 ton limit in handbook]
2-Can a 25ft be launched on slip with only the family wihout tears
3-can i safeley motor to the scillies from Penzance in summer
4-What gph would it give in petrol or diesel
5-Is red diesel definetley going to be banned
6-Has anybody bought a boat through global imports
7-Do i really need a bath and plenty of room for my wifes shoes ?
