I suggest that you join your local sailing club

You don't need to buy a boat to join a club
suggest you get down to your local dinghy sailing club. now is not an ideal time to join as most clubs will have little sailing except for the hardy winter frost bite racing.
go down to your local club, they should have a notice board outside with name and telephone number of the membership secretary, give him/her a call and introduce yourself.
any decent club will give you a free trial sail.
after that, for the price of a membership fee there will be boat owners falling over themselves to have an enthusiastic crew member on their boat for day siling or club racing
suggest you try out a couple of local clubs in your area
each club will be different depending upon the type of dinghyies/yachts they have and the location of the club/sailing area.

You will get a much better response from the practical boat owner forum rather than this ship's forum

if you mention where you want to sail you will get more specific recommendations of clubs for the area you want to sail, with the possibly the offer of a sail from a forumite.

whatever club you choose....... you will make a lot of friends

good luck

Hi Olly, good for you. I started at 18 (over 50 years ago!) and wish I could have started earlier. I had the opportunity as I lived in a town on the Clyde coast. I started with a sailing club at university as I did not know any clubs that had boats available for members except he rowing club, which I was a member of. I soon found that it was a bit of a pain getting access to the club boats and bought a sailing dinght of my own. The next problem was transport and that had to wait till I passed my test and bought a car. This will affect you if you want a trailer-sailer unless Dad is obliging.

Things are differnt now. There may be school or local authority sailing facilities which you can access. A club is a good way of getting knowlege and avoiding expense. A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money. BOAT is also an acronym for "bring on another thousand."

Finally, consider posting on Yachting Monthly's Scuttlebutt. More people read that forum and if you include a vague location in you profile, you may make useful contacts and get offers to crew.
