The 2011/2012 Ocean Cruising Club publication Flying Fish has just been published and has reviewed two interesting new books written by OCC members.

1. The first is a textbook about anchors. It has six parts; anchors; anchor rode; anchoring techniques; permanent moorings; tying up and rafting; anchoring etiquette and manners.
To give examples of detail:

The anchor section describes all the different anchors and their pros and cons, no judgement is made, it is left to the reader.

The rode section deals with: pros and cons of using chain and rope or combinatiom; snubbers; chums; triplines; chafe; length/scope; sea anchores and drogues.

Alex and Daria Blackwell, White Seahorse Inc (www. whiteseahorse.com) UKP13 ISBN978-0-9815--1710-0

2. The second is Offshore Sailing, designed for those going blue water sailing not offshore racing.

The first chapter is a very detailed discussion on the the compromise yacht owners need to make between seaworthiness, performance, sea kindliness, living conditions below and cost. The chapter concludes with a clear comparison between the pros and cons of heavy displacement, light, ultra light and catamarans.

Other chapters cover; sails and rigs; cloth; reefing and furling systems; twin headsails on a single bolt rope; deck accomodation; self-steering; water conservation; crew comfort; preparing for the Tropics; great detail on electronics and communications; the energy equation; risk assesment, a formidable list of spares and tools; going aloft and emergency equipment.

Dick McClary, RYA Publications www.rya.og.uk UKP16.99 ISBN 978-1-9064-3549-3.

Given that the authors are very experienced sailors they would be worth buying if anybody is thing of buying an anchor or wants to learn more about anchoring or going bluewater sailing. No vested or commercial interest.
