Here and elsewhere, I have seen references to 'new' regulations affecting boats longer than 47' (I think). I admit to having largely ignored the subject, safe in the knowledge that none of this affected me. But now I find it might! Can anyone tell me what these regulations are and suggest a source of information. Grateful for any information.

<font color=blue>Chris! So! You getting a big one eh! You never said anything to me yesterday. You will find the details on the MCA page, maybe the RYA pages too. The matter has been discussed either here or in the motor boats forum. I'm not sure it will affect you though as I understand it you will be staying on the continental inland waterways.

Thanks for that. Got a lot of info from that site but am unsure how they define 'length' Is this including davits and any other sticky-out bits so beloved by marinas when fixing berthing charges, hull length or what?

You make me feel inferior. I keep getting e-mails suggesting I enlarge mine!

Quick google search on "MCGA, regulations, length, definition", gave the following result from the MCGA website. It's in relation to fishing boats, and no mention of pleasure boats.

"length overall" means the distance between the foreside of the foremost fixed permanent structure and the afterside of the aftermost fixed permanent structure; and "fixed permanent structure" -

(a) includes any portion of the hull which is capable of being detached, but which is fixed in place during the normal operation of the vessel,

(b) does not include functional arrangements such as safety rails, bowsprits, pulpits, stemhead fittings, rudders, steering gear, outdrives, outboard motors, propulsion machinery, diving platforms, rubbing strips and fenders, other than where such functional arrangements are designed to replace any part of the hull that has been removed;.

There's a telephone number at the bottom of the pdf file you viewed. If you have any doubts about whether you're inside or outside the length requirements, best to call them (or better still get it in writing)

Many thanks BrendanS. Have sent MCA an e-mail with an enquiry specific to the boat I am buying.
