My chum is on board and believes that the lead has been got at by a rodent. His picture suggests that possibly there has been serious UV degradation, The unit has been behind the cockpit window for 6 years in Spain!
In any case a new lead is called for. Are the connections standard for most VHFs or should I get him to bring the old connector back?

Plastic some times goes brittle due to loss of plasterer.

I have 2 curly cables on an old simrad VHF radio that I need to replace. I have made the curly cable just need a round to it to get it done

Bring the old cabke and connector back as I don't think the connector are all the same as my Standard Horizon and Simrad are different

It looks like the cable is permanently fitted with a moulded cable strain relief instead of a plug and socket.
The cable seems to have 7 cores or possibly 6 and a screen. ( 2xspeaker, 2x mic, 2x comms)

If you can find a suitable cable you could use a plastic cable gland instead of the strain relief or even fit your own choice of connector in the existing hole.
This cable might suit but will involve some soldering.
Probably best to get a replacement new mic of the correct type.

One of my radios - the one in my van, has been badly impacted by heat, cold and UV and is sort of shredding. Virtually every radio with a proper connector, including the RJ45 type, has unique wiring, Even when they use the same connectors - you cannot guarantee compatibility. That said, as long as you have the old mic to use as a guide, if you can solder, they're not too bad. Simplest are the basic ones, with no keypad - 4 conductors - worst, the ones with backlit buttons, and a keypad.

I faced the same problem. Bought a new cable with the appropriate number of cores and then found that while I have reasonable soldering and crimping skills (and tools), the connectors involved were just too tiny for me.
Sadly the whole lot got binned.
