A while back I mentioned about the Garmin GPS phone that was being launched in the UK. It seems to be available now at this link :-

http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?product_id=330&category_id=61

I think you can send a message to someone else's phone requesting their position which if the agree is displayed on your screen. Could be quite useful for meeting up with each other at Sea /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Just a question so don't shout at me, but why do you need to post the same post on every bloody forum?

Errrr!
Because they are two different forums
Because some people only read one and not the other
Because if everyone read both, why not just have one

Or are you just trying to wind me up with such a daft question?

This is great technology but one day soon people will be able to see in real time exactly where you are - depending on your point of view this is either an extremely useful thing (e.g. parents monitoring children) or a rather scary thing (e.g. employers/spouses)!

This function is already possible with non-gps phones.

There is a software based service which enables fleet operators etc. to locate drivers' phones down to individual cells. The limitation for marine use would be coverage, but the same applies for gps phones.

Hi Gordon, I do believe that system was being made available to the public as I have it. There has been some problems with some of the network providers, but I don't know if it is up and running yet. They get their revenue from a charge imposed on each 'track' about 35p or so. You see a map on your PC showing the location of the phone, (it doesn't say if the phone is with the person /forums/images/icons/wink.gif)

There are some walkie takies about that use the same system, useful for hikers et.c.

I gather the phone doesn't have to be answered for a fix to be made. Might be useful to track the thieving git that broke into my car and pinched my phone last week.

There again the missus could catch you out in the pub when your s'posed to be at work... forget it!

Nah! just leave it on your desk and divert it to your new secret 'pay as you go' /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif That would be easy enough to fool them /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I like it!!!! I would never have been devious enough to come up with a plan like that, no surprises that I always get caught out when I am up to no good.

Well actually there are three main forums, plus a few others, so you might aswell post it on all of them. I was not trying to wind you up and it wasn't a daft question, it did beg a reply, which it received.

I was always under the impression that multiple postings in more than one forum were frowned upon ?, and have tried to avoid them for that reason

<hr width=100% size=1>Err, let me know if Depsol enters the forum, I'll go and hide

I guess he can do whatever he likes. Thats what he told me anyway. Free world and all that, I was just trying to tell him nicely, but never mind, I just can't be bothered, otherwise I'll be accused of happy1 bashing.

Re: Pity about price .....

I thought the same /forums/images/icons/wink.gif It seems to be the same everywhere, phones adding PDA's, PDA's adding phones, Phones adding GPS e.t.c You end up with stuff that does not do what a full dedicated unit would do. I guess it would have it's uses, but not for me I'm afraid, I can get 10x the info on my e-mao, although I cant text the location, it would not be hard to give the co-ordinates /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
