I am struggling to get advice on what new fuel filters to fit on my boat. I have two in line series fav type fuel filters before the last fuel filter on the side of the engine. Engines are 2006 mercuries 250 Dtronics.

I think the fuel flow is being restricted. I want to put a new fuel filter with a glass bowl water separator and one the allows me to change the filter element easily. All I can find are Separ or Racor which aren't that cheap. Also I can't seem to find what fuel flow rate I need.

Any advice would be very helpful.

I believe Separ are supposedly technically better but RACOR filter inserts are cheaper and easy to get everywhere and really easy to change filters. (separ are a bit of a faff). You need a fuel filter that can pass about 3 times more than your maximum fuel burn to allow for the continual recirculation of fuel which is a lot more than the engine actually burns. Once you have got a flow spec have a look on ebay if budget is limited as RACORs are fitted to all sorts of machinery. They are quite simple and easy to strip if you get a secondhand one and give it a thorough clean out with petrol to get rid of any traces of diesel bug and other gunge. The pipe threads are American so for fittings talk to ASAP supplies as they sell all the bits. If you plan on going inland on a river or a lake the boat safety scheme won´t permit glass bowls so something else to check before you get spending. What makes you think your fuel flow is restricted?

I have the same engine as you and I have a fitted Racor FG500 prefilter and use a 30 micron filter within it and it also has the Quicksilver engine mounted one which I assume is 10 or 5 micron.

one thing, don't scrimp on filters, buy what's required.

I have a FG500 racor unit, with water monitor, glass bowl and a metal dish under that - and using 30micron filter, I would have thought this would have been suitable for your needs, however Latestarter1 is the real expert on these things, I am sure he will be along soon.

The one mentioned here with metal dish is suitable for inland waterways.

Thanks everyone.
I feel the fuel isn't flowing enough as I don't think that's filters are designed to allow enough fuel to flow through to get the best of the engine. It's just a feeling to be honest.

Will look at the Racor filters to see how much they are.
