Hi Everyone, I would appreciate some help chosing a new engine for my Macwester 26. I currently have a 10 hp Stuart Turner, and would be happier with a diesel engine.

The engines I am considering are either Nanni or Lombardini as they are both fresh water cooled and not too expensive. Both are aprox 13 hp, is this sufficient or should I go for more?

Can anyone recommend either engine? I am also considering doing all of the work myself to save on the installation costs. Any tips on lining up the engine and shaft?

Thanks for your help...

I suggest tou look at the following before making your decision on which one to buy.
How long is the warranty period?
How is spares availability
Price of consumables eg oil filter sacrificial annode etc
Price of spares etc
Other wise power should be ok
P.S. will fitting it yourself affect warranty ?
Hope this helps.

I have an invicat which has a dolphin engine ( alomst the same as yours) and i looked at this exact same problem 2 years ago. I looked all of the small deisel engines and found that only the Yanmar 1gm would do. but the big problem was with the stern gear. You may find as i did that your shaft is too small for a diesel and so you need a bigger and stern tube. This is a lot of work and very expensive.
Also the engine beds were wrong on my boat and needed to be re made. In the end i stayed with ny Dolphin as the cost to get a recon Yanmar and get it half fitted (engine beds, sterngear) was over 5k which is half to value of my boat.
If you are trying to just get a better engine try a dolphoin as mine is great. And ignore all those people who say 'petrol engine..oh no thats far to dangerous'. Then watch as they light there gas stove inside the boat. Gas is far more dangerous than petrol and we all have it.

What about Beta Marine 13 hp? Like the Nanni this is a marinised Mitsubishi block. Not sure but I think they're cheaper and would have advantage of being more locally based. I put one in my Kingfisher 26 three years ago and have had no problems at all. Support from Beta is very good, they've been very helpful in giving advice, faxing wiring drawings etc.

Cheers

What ever engine you buy - don't buy it in Britain.

I needed a new engine and after a careful study found that the installed prices quoted in UK were all well above those quoted in Scandinavia.

Mine was fitted by Lund Marine at Egaa in Denmark and the total cost (fitted and tested) was £2,250 less than the purchase price of the engine alone in UK (Unfitted). VAT in Denmark is 25%, in UK 17.5%.

We are being ripped off in UK.

If you are looking for a new engine go for the Beta 13, it is probably the cheapest and from my point of view the best, spares are cheap and readily available as well.
Good luck
