New brass ship\'s clock

looking for a nice new one but don't want to spent more than £100. Plastimo 4.5" clock looks good for the price but am concerned that there may be better quality clocks available.

Any suggestions?

Check out the quartz movement if you are looking for quality - mine has a German 'Junghans' movement and it gains one second a week.

Mr Harrison would be very impressed I think.

Oh and £16 on ebay.........

Re: New brass ship\'s clock

There are several good ones around and much depends on the looks. You need to make sure it's solid brass of course, and whether it's got one or two of those twiddly things to close the case, and whether SWMBO approves.

Re: New brass ship\'s clock

Quality = price.

The main difference being thickness of brass, and thickness and quality of the laquer coating over the brass. I found the plastimo ones to be decent brass, but nowhere near the same laquer quality as FCC (previous ones that were stolen) Thus the brass becomes mottled and eventually needs cleaning .

Also beware. Some of the cheaper ones require unscrewing from the bulkhead in order to change the batteries. Make sure you can change batteries without having to do this. I bought a nice matched clock and barometer by Howard Miller from www.defenderus.com I think they were about $99 each. Very good solid brass and the clock keeps good time - |I only need to adjust about once a year when the battery needs changing. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Even after 5 years with very high humidity during the summer and large temperature range it still looks good as new.
