I now know why people don’t paint their boats. I was down there 7am today, sanded solidly for 9 hours….still another 5 at least to go I reckon.

starts off like super tough emulsion texture


80 grit then 120 grit gets me to this. Still feels a little textured



320 grit final go gets me sorted. The epoxy dusts off light grey and sits in the dips so very handy as I can see where I need to carry on. The reflection is surprisingly good seeing as it’s Matt primer with water over the surface. You can see to the left of the last picture an area I hadn’t done at 320 grit.….orange peely.

Im assured the top coat can level out quite a lot of surface imperfections but got to do my best to give it a fighting start!



it’ll be worth it in the end! Maybe should have gone Matt. I’d have been done by now ???

There is a perverse satisfaction to seeing a compatriot work as hard as I seem to do. Of course the day you scratch it putting it back on the trailer to reveal shiny red gelcoat I shall break out the beer and commiserate.

Good luck with it and remember one thing. When you are done it will be only you that can see the many imperfections and be scarred by their tale of hardship. Nobody else will notice them. You'll never get in the water otherwise.

Well….just another 6 hours today but we are there!. 320 grit made the real difference but it was hard going and I went through 17 discs. She is as flat as I’m going to manage so on to the top coats! White sections tomorrow.

You have done enough of the decorational stuff now, put the sander and paint brush down and get the muffs on those engines.

Better have another walk around, you know with painting its all prep prep prep. No going back.

Good luck mate. Loads of hard work there and you have undertaken probably what is the hardest of jobs to get right. Great big slabs of smooth panel to paint. It's a near impossible DIY job even with a spray gun.

Can’t help but feel that if you’d slapped a bit of Dulux on it you would be out and about in this window of weather….

I've always felt that revenge is a dish best served cold. The amount of grief you have afforded me over the years is large and will take quite some time yet to level. ?

A fellow compatriot. Did I tell you my stories regarding that turbo? Ever leave the house and wonder if you left the iron on? I'm crapping myself that I may have the turbo gasket 90 degree out and blocking the flow of coolant. Everything done by touch, but from awkward and impossible positions. We shall find out this weekend as I very gingerly exit the harbour onto the plane with the thermogun steadily aimed at the offending b@£$%^& item.

Plus my boat has moved more than his so far this season and its on beer barrels!
