After much searching and a touch of indecision along the way we have finally bought our latest boat.

As some may recall, our journey started about a year ago when we sold our Fairline Targa 35 with the idea of getting a yacht. We got as far as considering an offer on one before we thought things through and decided to stick with power. That was around July last year and since then we have considered various options from flybridges to sports cruisers, looked at some nice and not so nice boats, negotiated on one or two with somewhat unrealistic owners and even had an offer accepted only for the survey to throw up some issues we just weren't happy to live with.

Along the way we visited the London Boat Show and enjoyed looking around the used boat pontoons and were quite impressed with the Broom 41 that Norfolk Yacht Agency had on display.

At that time we didn't think it was for us but when the purchase on the other boat fell through because of the survey we went and had another look at the Broom at the NYA site in Brundall. Surprisingly she hadn't sold so after a look at other options and negotiations with NYA we struck a deal and last weekend we took delivery.

NYA have been a pleasure to deal with and the boat, despite being some 20 years old, is in excellent condition. We are absolutely delighted with her but boy is she big compared to our Targa. Fortunately she is our second Broom so I am getting the hang of shafts again quite quickly.

As ever people on here have been helpful with my various requests for information and advice (particularly volvopaul) so I thought it only right to share the outcome.

I haven't posted pics on here for a long time so i hope they appear okay....

congratulations, funny enough both SWMBO & I were admiring a Broom on saturday, not entirely sure the size, looked pretty similar...but yours looks a great looking boat and she looks really fine for the age! and certainly you get the impression of space from your pictures! What engines? Anyway, hope you have much fun on her and a good season!

Many thanks. She has Perkins Sabre M300Ti engines, which are actually 285hp as I understand it. She reached over 25 knots at WOT and cruised comfortably at 20 knots when we trailed her so quite happy with that.

Greg, I'm guessing "trailed" is a typo for trial as that would be a mighty boat to trail! Would love to see the tow car!!!;)

Looks to be a lovely boat for it's age! Hope it provides lots of good times for you.

Know what you mean about the journey. Often feel like civil war on legs, changing opinions about which boats would be best. Sometimes surprise myself about the variety of boats I include on the shopping list:o

Hope you have fun.

well 25knots WOT is pretty good with those engines and 20 knots is a decent cruising speed to be able to cover distances well, just looked over the pictures again, just looks very comfortable!

Thanks guys and apologies for neglecting to take pics of the engines. I will put that right this weekend!!

Speeds achieved on trial (not trail) were with no water, not a lot of fuel and no cruising gear so I guess we may lose a little when we load her up but still not bad I thought.

well done greg, mandy.

she does look very good indeed, will we be seeing you down this way soon ??

congratulations again and wish you all the very best with her.

Thanks Steve. We have a week off later in the month and if I have my way we will pop down the coast. If we do I'll let you know.

Congratulations. Looks in fantastic condition, and huuuuge accommodations. I like the heavy engineering - see diameter of the canopy s/s tubes in pic #6

I went to Brundall a few times last year. Nice place. If you turn right at top of lane, leaving Broom behind you, there is a petrol station that must be nearly the only one in the country where they still come out and fill your car for you :-)

Is that a locking box on port side of dash, to protect the electronics from being stolen?

Happy voyaging

Thanks jfm. Yes, it is a locking box for the electronics. Quite a good idea but given the heavy engineering you refer to it is a bit of a lump when you remove it. Fortunately there is plenty of room to find somewhere to out it!

Apart from the plotter (Raymarine C80) the electronics appear to be of 1992 vintage and look a bit dated. Thing is there is just about everything there that you could wish for and it all works so might not be worth spending thousands to update it all.

Well done Greg & Mandy. Can't wait to see her in the flesh soon! It's surprising how different the layout is inside to another Broom 41 owned by friends. I know it's meant to be a breakfast bar, but a set of optics and a couple of hand-pumps on there will look great!;)

many congratulations on your new boat, she looks in superb condition. Interestingly enough we have been doing a similar thing to you, in that we were debating whether to stay with Power and buy a Haines or Broom or go over to Sail. We went the other way to you and decided to try the Raggie thing for a few years as we now have more time on our hands and love being out on the Sea.

Enjoy your new boat.

Greg, we used to have a mooring at Acle. We loved the Broads, especially when my daughter was young. It is such a stress-free place to be, with moorings every few minutes. You can moor practically anywhere and just chill.

Great boat, Greg2. I had a Broom 37 before I went off to the Med. The 37 was the forerunner of the 41. Same hull but with integrated bathing platform. Our 37 had Sabre 275hp motors and was good for about 24-25kts so your 25kts sounds about right. The 41 is an excellent sea boat and built like a brick outhouse, like all Brooms. Personally I prefer the layout with the lower dinette rather than enlarged galley but each to his own. IMHO for northern European climes, you can't beat the aft command position. Has your 41 got the clever folding hood that I think Broom introduced on the 41 model? I'm sure you'll be very happy with her

Looks lovely, always had a soft spot for Broom, we looked at a few when we swapped from sail. Fabulous aft cabin and easy handling from the command position (also only one set of electronics to update!).

Questions questions.

What are your plans for a tender?
What's the gadget on saloon wall below the clock+barometer?
A fun mod one day would be to fit a bigger transom window
I like the saloon sofa. Very Barcelona :)
