Being a Ford Escort rally competitor I can feel your pain from all those years back , great story .

There's another twist to the story ... as they say it comes in three's.

I needed a car for general running around - so I bought an old Mk1 1300 Escort ... purely to get me mobile ...

When I bought the second 2.8i ... I sold the Escort ... signed the slip at bottom of document or whatever you did then ... I had my money - guy went off with the car ...

Little while later - by then the Escort was only a memory ... Police arrived at house asking where was the Escort Regn # xxxxxxx ....

Would we like to come to station for a 'chat' .... now this started alarm ringing in my head ... WTF ????

I pressed the Constable and also produced paper to show I had sold the car ....

Finally he told us :

Car was seen in Southsea - along the promenade. Driver was heard arguing with a couple on the pavement .. next out comes a gun !!

The car was involved in a robbery and the threatening episode ... before Police arrived car had gone - but Reg # was given by witnesses ....

I never did find out what the connection was between the robbery and gun pointed at the couple ... there was later an article in local papers but scant info.
I never chased up after .. wish I had now - interested to know outcome.

I had that happen here....the gendarmes came to check on my Volvo....a robbery in Paris I think ....that’s a thousand kilometers away, and of course we are an elderly couple....they photographed the car....especially interested in the Swiss vignette on the windscreen.....I can only assume that without a license plate they checked on every (blue?) Volvo in the land

Vignette ..... here its an extra road tax for vehicles over a certain weight ... and able to carry goods ... not exactly sure - but that'll do.

Guy I knew bought a RAM pickup ... IMHO horrible vehicles - but some like them ..... and he drove it all over Latvia ..... After a couple of weeks he received a letter in the mail informing him of Road Traffic Fines for driving the RAM without paying the 'Vignette' .... the fines totalled over 3000 euros !!

Some time after - I decided to buy an Opel Movano with 4m open cargo bed and 1 tonne Hiab. The vehicle was from Demark and I had to register it in Latvia. Off to Road Registration (CSDD) and went through the registration.
I then drove the vehicle home ... about a 3hr drive ....
One week later - I get a letter ... 500 euro fine for not paying 'Vignette'.
I was annoyed and went to our local CSDD office ... to see if any possibility to cancel the fine. The CSDD office when I registered the vehicle never mentioned or asked if I wanted to pay Vignette .. they never informed me it was liable ...
Of course fine was not cancelled .................
