new Azimut 58

Nice layout, but is it really any better than an Aicon 56?

Yes it is, the Aicon has teeny saloon with almost a bench seat, no worktop space in the galley, and poor flybridge design.

Boats should be designed for a number of people, and all areas of the boat should accomodate them. That's where this Azi layout scores for me, 6 adults could use every part of the boat in comfort, cabins, saloon, dinette and fly.

Only gripe now i've looked in a bit more detail is that it looks like you lose the lazarette if you have a crew cabin, although they may have done something clever under the bathing platform a la Ferretti. If not, that's a big shortcoming if you have loads of watersports stuff to store.

Dunno why but a combined engine bay/lazarette seems to be an Italian thing and whilst it makes the engine bay v spacious and easy to crawl about in, it is a pain for storing things. Our previous boat was an AZ46 and the only lazarette storage was the aft crew cabin but the tight access made it impossible to get anything bulky in there. Our current Ferretti is much the same in that the crew cabin access is too tight for bulky items. As you say, there is quite a large storage area under the bathing platform but you have to lift the tender to get at it so it's not usable for storing items you want to get at regularly
It will sound like a small issue to some peeps but finding enough storage space to store things like bikes, windsurfers, canoes and other water toys is a major consideration for Med boats

Couldn't agree more. We have two bikes, two sets of diving gear, three ringos, wakeboard, waterskis, surfboard, ladders, three folding chairs, fishing gear, tools, pushchair, and SWMBO's grandma trolley in the lazarette. I'm planning to get a windsurfer as well, so the trolley might have to go.

Sounds like you ought to have your own car boot sale /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks guys - I was starting to think that our next boat (that we've nearly ordered) was going to be too big.
Sounds like you cant have too much storage space in the Med.
Not got any bikes yet - those are the things you have to pedal yourself - arent they!!
I thought a hire car might be easier.
