Hi All,

I am looking as a first time buyer at something like a Azimut 43,

As a first time boat buyer I'm looking for help with what the costs
are in terms of fuel, maintenance, insurance, mooring, do I need a skipper? What are the monthly average outgoings on a baot in the 40' range?

I also would like some berth space over the summer in the Balearics, Ibiza and Mallorca mainly.

Any information provided would be much appreciated,

Andrew

Rough guide to cost = 10% of the boats value per year. As for skipper it depends on your experience and how much time you can spend on the boat to oversee it's upkeep and how you want to use it. Send a PM to TCM he knows all ablout it first hand.

Myself and the fiance are looking for a skipper and crew vacancy if you want to pm???

Are you chartering?

Costs would be very different in the med compared to here in the UK as although fuel is more expensive moorings can be cheaper. I don't know if others agree but I feel wear and tear is a little less out there because of the fairer weather.

Hello Andrew,

I would agree with the comment about 10% of the purchase price being a reasonable rule of thumb for an annual running cost, but would add that this IMO should be a maximum and with careful budgetting and a sensible maintanence program could be much lower and is very dependent on the age of the yacht and your cruising itinerary.

Berths in Mallorca would be around $250,000max for a fifteeen metre berth in one of the smarter/more popular marinas and less in the slightly less fashionable ports and with the possibility of the America's cup coming to Mallorca could potentially be an extremely lucrative investment.

Let me know if I can be of any help r.e. yachts or berths down this end.

Best regards, Russell.

You dont need a skipper for a boat this size. Take a Day Skipper course with a powerboat training school and with a little experience you will be able to handle a boat of this size
Moorings in the Balearics are expensive. Reckon on about £8 - 10k per year for a 43 footer. If you moored somewhere on the Spanish mainland, say around Alicante, it could be a third of this

Other costs will be around

Fuel £7000 (based on 100hrs per season @ 20 gph @ £3.50/g in Med)
Insurance £1000
Maintenance £2000 - £5000 (depending on what goes wrong)

If the boat is in the Med and you are'nt local, you will probably need a guardiennage service at about £200 per month for regular checking of mooring lines and fenders, running up engines and cleaning

Also, you have to take account of depreciation which on a secondhand 43 footer may be £5 - 10k per annum and, of course, your financing costs.

Agree with Mike's figures, very similar to my own with a 37 footer based in Sardinia (similar to Mike's Spanish one-third S France figure)
add to this, flights to the marina, taxis etc.....location of marina to airport is a key decision factor in marina selection.
Also the touring you will do will cost you €50 - €100+ per night in additional marina fees
No need for a Skipper, bigger boats are far easier to handle than small ones and you get more keyside help.
Oh yes, a bowthruster is an absolute must.

All these frightening costs appear as on costs to boat ownership but don't forget you are having the holiday of your life, and it's there whenever you want it.
So for real cost deduct the cost of your usual family holidays because you won't be looking at Thomson or 'rent-a-chalet with a pool' any more.

Re: Big Money

It should'nt scare him off. Compare it to the cost of running a typical luxo barge car like a Beemer 745i. The running cost of a vehicle like this is about £1.30 per mile. So thats about £26,000 for 20,000miles pa.and thats before you start talking about the cost of garaging, parking and incedentals like speeding fines!
So, the cost of running an AZ43 is'nt that dissimilar from running a so-called prestige car. Suddenly a flash motor boat sounds terribly sensible? This is the argument I use for 'er indoors whenever she questions what I spend on the boat
